this will probably go down as one of the biggest decision made in kenya business circles gina din opting out of the safaricom account .

she was the front runner to bag the account had she pitched

Thanks @madollar, very well written article. This contract is definitely a vestige of the MJ error and was almost untouchable.

It makes sense to split the retainer between Corporate, cSR, Events. And it makes even more sense for me to put some money aside to buy SCANgroup share at the Exchange - Gosh they have everything!

What is admirable though, is the courage by GinaDin to save face and pull out of the account confirmed on Twitter.

@McReggae, I struggle to see how one would choose upcoming Orange account over the widely coveted Safaricom account in my view.

But your story link TechMtaa is quite pro-Gina Din while @madollar's link NairobiTech seems to lean on the Safaricom side.

Though both stories are factual in most respects, the article by Robert Alai smacks of washing dirty linen in public or a hired gun. Sample:
Quote:
....key “untouchable personnel” who are in marketing, advertising and PR might have pushed Gina Din out-of-the-way...

...as some of the key personnel who have been pushed out of Safaricom by Wangari Murugu and other senior executives who have a godfather in Chairman, Michael Ng’ang’a and view Bob Collymore as a very weak CEO. Key sources indicates that Safaricom cannot match its peers on employee benefits with most of the key senior staff now feeling wasted and over used while the “company does not upgrade you.” Wangari Murugu’s sister, Fiona Murugu, is also said to be a key middle level employee in the company.

Victoria Kaigai ... most of her peers are at a loss to what value she will bring into Safaricom PR.

Bob Collymore is always tweeting Gina Din... No more tweets, i guess.

This could mean two things:-
1.Cost cutting measure:-by opening this to an open bid safaricom will be able to get value for money given that Gina Din has been with safaricom for a very long time making it impossible for PR consultant to think outside the box.

2.Change of strategy:- safaricom has over the years lost its mwananchi company tagline which contributed immensely to its growth. Now a days the company look exploitative and a bully...Gina Din did nothing to change that perception ..which I think is their job.

Lately I have seen bob collymore try to connect with the average mwananchi...I saw some picture of him touring Ghetto and some Eastlands estates with Juliani...I think the company wants to go back to its roots before they loose it to the competition.

how does the song go...
Son, I've made my life out of readin' people's faces,
And knowin' what their cards were
by the way they held their eyes.
So if you don't mind my saying,
I can see you're out of tweets.

...You got to know when to hold 'em,
know when to fold 'em,
Know when to walk away and know when to run.
You never count your money when you're sittin' at the table.
There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealin's done.

You have three options
a) Reapply for your job
b) Resign
c) being fired

Gina is a PR person took the safest option to save face.

BBI will solve it

From the goings on in the media world, am not sure I'd be doing this... unless in the short run....
