My goodness, people are talking of 15 minutes? I went for it when testing was real testing. One had to wait for almost one week. Before you get the result already unahara na kutapika due to stress and the whole apetite gone, until you are convienced you have it. Ulikua ukiingia hosi unaandika kwa paper coz you cant dare mention what you have come to do. The kind of a look the receiptionist nurse will give you unajijazia the lest. That is the moment i came to realize that technically you can spend some minutes without breathing. For sure i was not breathing as the doctor explained to me and by the time he finished and said -ve i just fell down na kuzilai one minute. Mtu wakuniambia to go back threre tunakosana.

I once read online that independent scientific researchers have severally proved that the rate of AIDS progression is directly proportional to the rate of depletion of selenium in the body! That is,the closer to normal ur selenium levels r the further away from death from AIDS u r.

NB: Selenium is not a cure,it is just needed to build certain immune proteins but if these r ravaged by the virus, then even more selenium is needed. Whats is more confusing is that even the HIV itself uses selenium to reproduce (yet if u have high levels of selenium it doesnt kill you..... ).Yes,confusing!

There was even a study about the correlations btw worldwide geographic selenium soil deposits and AIDS mortality that was said to support the above (they said sub-saharan africa has the least selenium in the world!).

Whether taking selenium supplements (supplementing conventional medicare care) prolongs or improves life,I do not know. U might want to check on the latest findings,or discuss the matter with your relas doctor.

Take heart,HIV is manageable these days.

@Slykat,

Thanks for your contribution. Those are the kinds of info i need. The main challange i have is that the fella is not free to discuss this issue. But am trusting God that one of these fine days we shall put the matter on the table. She was given some meds and so far therez an improvement but from the letter, twaz written that no blood count has been done which i think is critical.

et all,

Could someone be so kind enough to explain to me why a pal of mine is being charged by Aga Khan the ridiculous amount as per below for a HIV test?

Kshs 1,200 for consultation
Kshs 1,500 for the HIV test
wait for 3 days, when you go back
Kshs 510
totaling to =Ksh 3,210 for a HIV TEST?

is there something I don't understand if this was the cost of testing, then guys would be dying like flies....

sometime back I needed several medical checks for life insurance and i paid 800bob for HIV Elisa I & II at mediplan-its somewhere in Upperhill.

If they charge that much does it mean then that results brandished by people from VCT's that take 10-15 minutes are flawed....

Eish can someonen please explain to me...before I conclude that AGH are reeaaally mediocre and money minded.

there are two types of tests...

a) ELISA that looks for antibodies....

a lot cheaper and takes longer...

b) PCR.. that looks for the virus....

costly.... takes a shorter period....
