Are you looking for good quality sound (being able to hear the singer inhale) or do you just want the matatu boom boom sound?

For the latter, a 1500 PMPO will suffice, brand name is immaterial. Get a 5 speaker system and ensure they are placed well in the room, use the calibrator which comes with it.

For serious quality, build a system component by component. Bose speakers, Sansui amp, Yahama CD player etc. Painstaking, expensive but worth it if you are a music connoiseur(sp).

PMPO is a completely meaningless quantity with no basis whatsoever in engineering. The PMPO figures quoted on equipment are generated in marketing brainstorming sessions! Not in the engineering design labs.... Something like...

Marketing Officer: "the engineers said this thing can produce 30W. That figure sounds too small. Why don't we write 300W?"

Marketing Manager: "No! 300W looks funny. We should put something more wholesome, say 500W"

Marketing Director: "But that will be lower than what our competitors have and we must be recognised as the leaders in this segment, so I say we put at least 1,000W, or 1,500W"

Artwork Designer (a few weeks later): "The figure 1,500W doesn't fit well on the front panel. The number '5' is too broad for that space. I suggest we either use 1,000W or 2,000W"

Marketing director: "No; we can't reduce the number. Use 2,000W. After all I don't like odd numbers"

And that is how the equipment get's a label screaming "2,000W PMPO"

Please do email me the contacts of the place you got technical support. Struggling with some set up and need some knowledgeable help. manbolite@gmail.com

@Papa; what is the problem with your equipment?

Why not take it back to the place where you bought it?

If out of the country, then any good electronics technician should be able to sort you out.

There is no problem with the equipment..i imported it from outside ke so ve to struggle on my own. My challenge is that dont feel ve optimised the set-up for my living room and type of media usually play to the best of the system capability.(connect hdmi cable...or use normal cable...which set up hall or theatre...digital or analog surround?)

The machine came with a manual which only an engineer can decipher optimally. Thats what am looking for, great sound engineer to help me get the optimum performance from the monster..

Give us the model number[s] of your equipment and we'll try to help.

@cardinal; it's all a matter of taste. Go to a shop that has both makes. Be sure to carry a few of your favorite recordings.

Ask the attendant to test them for you. Play a song on one then on the other. Listen carefully and you will be able to hear differences in the quality of output.

Settle on the one that sounds better to your ears.

Forget about looks. Remember that music systems are for listening to not looking at!

And, may I ask why you have settled on these two brands? There are many others, you know!

Sorry but this will never work. What sounds good in the shopping mall will sound completely different in the house (different room size, furnishing etc.). One should note that the home theater systems being pushed through the supermarkets are specifically designed for private "small" dwellings. Think of getting "more" bass when you place the sub-woofer in a corner as opposed to the middle of the room. Same thing here.

What I do agree with is the looks. I've seen more than enough people forking out untold sums for those home theater systems (I'm looking at you Sony) lit up like Christmas trees. They may look good but in the dark trying to watch a movie and you can't dim the amp lights? Yuck!

YEP!!! the SL1200 is a boss turntable if you want to get the original feel and if you fancy yourself a scratch DJ, however you will pay top dollar for one of these. For the vinyls....which can be difficult to find, you can use the famous Serato solution where you can play mp3's and scratch using the turntables, you connect all this using a computer and Serato will give you two "signal" 12" vinyls for you to manipulate your sounds, another less popular solution is Traktor scratch pro.
Other brands include sony(YES) Stanton, Numark, crosley, Teac and Oracle.

On the digital side, you can use the industry standard Pioneer cdj2000. That also costs top dollar but it allows you to use mp3 DVD's MP3 cd's and regular audio cd's and it even has a usb port for your regular flash drive with tunes on it. Other cd based "turntables" or just really fancy and hardcore cd players brands include Denon, Stanton, Numark, cortex, gemini and many many more.

In every great dj setup there is a mixer. Most scratch Djs use a two channel mixer with a very flexible crossfader. The most popular is the Rane two channel mixer, Rane are the guys who make the Serato software as well as the hardware.

Digital Djs find the pioneer DJM800 a very popular mixer because of the host of effects it has..this is especially for Trance DJ's like myself who like to make our music sound a little different than the original recording. Top of the range mixer by pioneer is the DJM2000...which has a lot of fancy features, especially when linked with the CDJ2000 cd players. Denon Dj also have a saucy mixer selection my favorite being the dnx-1500. Ohter offerings include Allen and Heath, stanton,Makie, Beringer, and a whole lot more.

So really it depends on what kinda dj you are...scratch or digital.....

I'm sorry to say @sanity but it sounds to me that you want to enter the dj field as a business. This industry requires passion, which if you had, you would not have asked the questions you have.

Question to Wazua sound gurus:
Where can I get a decent Digital AV Receiver perhaps bundled with matching floor speakers?
I have been using the normal Sony home theater systems & I want to upgrade.I need clear, clean sound with deep clean bass.
Is something like this good? .....?
