Why is Kalonzo scared of standing alone?

Why is Kalonzo so scared of standing on his own two feet? He has as good a chance as anyone of winning the race to State House. I rank him as one of the favorites if he can stop behaving like a subservient side-kick and sell his agenda to the voters directly.

The elections are a long way off yet; voters are waiting to be wooed.

Atuambie what he will do with the new Katiba if he is elected, what he thinks of ICC, what he thinks of Somalia etc etc…..

I also have a feeling that if UK and WR finally ‘’endorse’’ him as he is so desperately wishes, he will sort them out as the first agenda once he comes to power. Who will want ‘’kingmakers’ dictating to you what to do or not?

He has a big fighting chance. It all depends on how he handles the slap he has received from UK and WR. If the duo doesn’t run because of ICC, he may face RAO or Musalia, Saitoti, Martha and the ‘others’.

We all know how much venom/phobia RAO attracts (those are many anti-RAO votes, not really Kalonzo’s votes but he will reap them if he plays his cards right); Musalia is an unknown quantity while Saitoti is not really marketing himself hard.

50-50 chances for Stevo.

OK, my quick estimates...

RAO - 35-40%
Martha Karua >15-20%
Peter Kenneth >12-15%
(contender lying in wait) - 15%
Raphael Tuju - 2.5%
Musalia - 3.5%
Guka (aka Njung'e) Applause - 3% (without actively campaigning)
Kalonzo - 1.75%
Other barnyard fowl combined <5%

Lets remember UK/Ruto are both relatively "young" and could be persuaded NOT to run and instead play second fiddle to a main contender. Then they can "re-emerge" again in 2017/18. Let's not assume its a given that they will run - bad assumption. There are elders who will lean on them I think...

Lets also remember that, unlike in other countries, where opinion polls actually MEASURE public opinion, in Kenya they are used to SHAPE public opinion - so if any one is about to regurgitate something a research house stated under the guise of research - pls keep it...That is a staple I am not eating, thank you very much!

that can only happen in a movie. its gonna be a straight run-off between raila and uhuru, the top 2 candidates in round one. then we shall see how this ICC case issues and voter apathy will swing it

@ Djinn

Good analysis.

However, I think you have overrated Martha and PK. Where will they get those high % numbers assuming that Central puts their votes in the UK or UK proxy debe as expected? I would replace your stated Martha’s 15-20% with Saitoti and PK’s 12-15% with Musalia.

You also say that ‘’ There are elders who will lean on them I think...’’ Perhaps these same elders could also have a word with RAO and ask him not to run as well since political temperatures and tribal animosity would reduce by many decibels if he were to simama kando 2012? The ‘prayer rallies’ would become redundant and we would focus on more important things like implementing the new Katiba.
