Beware of 'Juakali' computerised car diagnosis

My car (2003 Toyota) was having that 'check engine' light on and so went to some guys who I see advertising computerised diagnosis for help. They hooked their machine to the car's CPU and printed out the error code i. e. SVL error. I asked them the way forward they said that to 'solve' the problem we just had to delete the error code from the car's memory which they did and the light went off. That's when I realised they didn't know what they were doing. I mean deleting the message doesn't solve the problem. When I put them to task about their lack of knowledge they said the problem was the cylinder head gasket that needed changing. Then that the thermostat needed to be unplugged otherwise the car would overheat and melt the engine etc etc.

I didn't want them to touch the car again so I left and nearly refused to pay for their so called diagnosis. I called my mechanic and he refered me to some guy who did the diagnosis again. It was the same error code and he correctly interpreted the problem to be the solenoid valve. We changed the valve and the problem disappeared and the light went off. And it's now been six months of problem free motoring.

Be careful who you consult since many mechanics have that diagnosis gadget nowadays but few know to interprete the error codes.

That's true. Had a similar problem last year where the ABS, hand brake light and another light with two arrows pointing at each other could not go off. I was advised to change brake pads, then do wheel alignment, then wheel balancing. When a certain mechanic told me to buy the same kind of wheels(not putting into consideration that the wheels are of the same size) i said enough is enough. Then another guy diagnosed it and told me one of the brake cable or something has cut and he used a cellotape to hold it together. The lights went off and that was in april last year. I even today thank the guy and the trouble i had gone through.

I have the same problem with ABS & wheel pressure indicator... where is your guy I pay him a visit.

I thought OBD is the generic name...
There are PC based tools, hand-held
Various types - VCM- OBD, MB star. Launch x431 master, autoboss30, etc
all have their benefits/limitations

depending on what you're looking for you could be looking at 50k - over 300k...
I think you can also get software just to upgrade - there was one @digitali here who dealt with such...

@GGK had a similar problem.....if its a toyota its probably the earthing for these two thats not connected to the car 'body' look out for some wire o the right side of the care next the wiper water reservoir..
....i agree its nothing major

Anyone still know of a person who does vehicle diagnosis? This thread is over three years old now and the person quoted might not still be in the business.

My check engine light came on, so I would like to be referred to a reputable place for diagnosis.

Some of the software used may not be the best for particular car models. Just like phones there are many clones diagonistic machines. The best guys are those who specialize in a specific make or model with the right machine and tools.
Those Machines that do Toyota only are more detailed.
Universal machines may be at times misleading.
