@KenyaLyrics Deacons sales per square foot is Sh7680 Do you know how much one pair of jeans cost in Woolworth or Mr Price Deacons? Also remember they have 25 mega shops across E.A. Please next time you window shop check the prices too or buy something...LOL...read more here http://www.contrarianinvestingkenya.info

I don't know when someone will adopt the 'Equity model' in the clothes business. I believe there's a huge market for new clothes but the prices quoted in those stores in the malls are just ridiculous. As someone has said items are priced upto 3 times the cost price. Why can't we have stores selling clothes at prices that many can afford. For those who have been to the UK I mean something akin to the chain store 'Primark' or 'TK Maxx' where you can get clothes at very affordable prices e. g. a nice pair of jeans at £5 or a polo shirt at £3. A single Primark store handles thousands of customers per day and stores are located in all towns in the UK so you can imagine their sales per day.

unfortunately jaggernut GOK doesnt see it like you.their taxes on this imported goods are exorbitant and the supply chain makes it expensive too.I am watching this space closely because GOK actually doubled import duty for mitumba from 1.2m to 1.9m so mitumbas will become expensive too people are closing shop in Gikomba. The thing is to see whether this converts mitumba buyers to buying new clothes which are priced much higher than even the revised prices of mitumbas after increase in import duty.

Well, why don't they quit? Then start their own businesses like many. many successful entrepreneurs have done!

Deacons to close shop in Tanzania over endless losses

Great move... Tanzania is an investors worst nightmare... Without these losses profits should shoot up wildly...

Shame on you Shame on you
This is not TRUE. Kenya used to be a waterloo for SA investors, so is TZ for impatient investors...Let them take time to learn what makes bongoland tick or ask those who know. TZ yields incredible returns for those who know how to play..

Deacons will keep its Tanzanian subsidiary Dormant for future resumption of operation to avoid new legal and registration costs..well, paying for space that is not being utilized seem to me a waste.

Quote:
The cost of rental space in Tanzania is $40 dollars compared with $18 dollars per square foot in the rest of the region.

well maybe the management know whats it is doing but paying for three stores indefinitely is a fixed cost that they dont need in their balance sheet for now.Why not look for partners who can operate the franchise and they remain minority shareholders.

Dude, lets start with the working hours. They slave from 8am to 9pm...daily even sunday. Yikes!!! No overtime nothing.Sad I know people hehehe. I think its rough and brutal to do this. Even leave is a luxury as they are very understaffed. Its shocking guys still work there as VVS put it.

I work long hours too. Even on Sundays & often on holidays. I get no overtime. I pay my own way. I have no steady income. It's a choice of being self-employed vs Mshahara...

Even when I was 'employed' I used to work the Sunday hours (not overtime) so I could study on weekdays or even have a weekday free. Maisha ni ngumu. It's better to have a job than none at all.

The realities are people want to shop on Saturdays & Sundays so some folks need to work on weekends. If you do not like it. QUIT.
