A friend of mine paid a visit to Eldoret a few weeks ago. He was visiting a relative, and he ended up staying a few days. When he came back he was pretty excited, and this is what he told me (I've never been there, btw):

1. There are plenty of 'BOSSES'- i.e. wealthy people - from farmers to olympians. There is also a core of foreigners who regularly visit either for tourism or to train with the gold medalists.

2. There are 8 universities - plenty of young people around, and the cost of living is low when compared with Nairobbery.

3. Apparently you can lease an acre at 5k (a month, I think - that's what his relative was doing) and grow crops on them. He said there are actually people making quite a living that way.

Now, any wazuans to back up what he said? I'm particularly thinking about starting something basic that caters to the local uni students. Surely there can't be a lot of services for them out there.

What do guys think? Keep in mind: Nakumatt started in Nakuru!!

I doubt about 8 universities....unless he counted campuses that include chep, annex, west campus, main campus, medicine, baraton, riftvalley institute, alphax, etc. They are not located within town.
Just like mj said kenyans have peculiar habits, university students have theirs too. The largest university in eldoret is moi, located about 35 kilometers from town. Its students come to town during the opening day, closing day, and twice or thrice mid the semester. Its like locating your business in CBD while relying on JKUAT, USIU and KU to keep it running.

Most University students have constrained budgets since they rely on parents for finances..bt they all need to eat, cheap/affordable food. Bt they can't keep on coming to town for lunch and supper...how about setting up cafes in the neighbourhoods of these campuses.

People around the area are constantly monied though...targeting them will surely give you good returns.

For teh students, list down 5 bizs that are demanded by university students. Start with photocopy...cafes...drinking dens...then work your way

Farming land availability: yes. Thats a common phenomena in Uasin Gishu and Trans zoia. Students? Depends, moi main is 35kms frm town. If targeting them, go to towns like Kesses, cheboiwo or even 'main gate'. There, iko pesa for sure.
