Hi Guys

I have Toyota NZE,and some times on down hill i put in on 'N' (Neutral). Just wana know am i damaging the car, engine or gear box ?

Another thing my mechanic told me there is no need of changing fuel filter and he was telling me there is some electronic gadget instead of fuel filter. Is it true ? so last time when service was done fuel filter was not changed.

Plz advise thanks.

The only danger is that you might not be able to break as fast as you would if teh car would have been in gear....in an emergency that is! Other than that, there isn't any major damage to your toyota! Just my one cent!

Why do you free wheel? To save fuel? How much fuel would you otherwise consume when going DOWNHILL? You stand to save more fuel you when the car in Neutral when stationary (i.e. in a jam).

I am not an expert but i dont think it can spoil anything considering the vehicle is just 'free' and moving on momentum. But then again why would you want to do this,if it is fuel, probably you are saving kshs.2.50 per 10 km.

On a different note,i have seen most of these model have their front toyota logo stolen. Does anyone know where you can get a cheap replace of the same. A guy at baricho road was talking of Kshs.2,500.

Freewheeling is not dangerous for small cars..but big trucks quickly loose the breaks (break drums heat up at high speeds and expand...then linings can't reach them, therefore no breaks....I used to be a truck driver some 25 years ago!!). Small cars have discs and pads at leats on front wheels therefore they don't experience that problem....and the are not heavy, therefore they won't generate much heat even at very high speeds.

However; never, ever, turn off the engine when free-wheeling. If you do,you will definitely loose the breaks and you might also lock the steering!!!

The amount of fuel you save might be insignificant, therefore not worth the bother!

Putting to neutral in a jam also DOES NOT save much fuel. If you want to save, turn off the engine when you are in a jam.....and when the traffic moves, lock the automatic in top gear (in some cars, the button for locking is labeled 'over-drive'; in that case, disengage the overdrive and put the car in top gear)

You know you are locked-in if the acceleration is slugish and the car doesn't change gears.

Anothe method of saving fuel with an automatic is to speed-up the gear changing sequence. You do this by letting go the accelerator pedal momentarily and pressing down again. This forces an 'early' shift to the next higher gear.

But if you think this is too much work; then just drive gently (and by 'gently',I don' necessarily mean slowly!!!!).

Driving style is the greatest contributor to excessive fuel consumption. The guy who picked my car from the port consumed a tank and a quarter driving it to Nairobi! When I do the same journey in the same car,I consume slightly under three-quarters of a tank!

A word of caution to all

An auto car in 'neutral gear' mode has no control in case of an emergency,e.g. if something sudden happens while on free wheel and you need to swerve, there is no power to give you the jerk you need since the gears are not engaged.

Always engage 'N' with lots of caution.
