Like two bald men fighting over a comb, Manchester City and Manchester United have been left to battle for European football's scraps after a Black Wednesday in the Champions League - Phil McNulty, BBC Sport's chief football writer

Each of the 32 clubs that were involved in the group stage will receive a participation bonus of €3.9m. In addition, they will be entitled to a match bonus of €550,000 per match played in the group stage. Performance bonuses will also see €800,000 paid for every win and €400,000 for every draw in the group stage.

The sides competing in the round of 16 can also expect to pick up €3m each, the quarter-finalists €3.3m and the semi-finalists €4.2m. The UEFA Champions League winners will receive €9m and the runners-up €5.6m. Apart from that ongeza revenue from media rights and commercial contracts concluded by UEFA.

Here are the figures for last season

Both Manchester clubs will feel the financial impact of early exit in May 2012 especially if one of them (both) fail to win the EPL....ooooh and whoever gets knocked out of the FA cup in January. Man City will probably get more money from the Sheikh but Man Utd will definitely have to sell some of their valuable players to get some money to spend on new signings.

How do you feel now @bkismat?

lakini poleni sana. but that europa cup has suddenly become significant.

@jahman and others.... dunia haijaisha. hebu jitokeshe, simama imara like the manU fan that you are.

Now a big question for everyone: will yesterday's event affect the number of FA teams that qualify automatically to the CL?

Unless it becomes routine for the English sides to fail to advance past the group stages in the next few years, England will still have four teams qualifying for the CL. UEFA uses club and league coefficients over a period of five years to determine who gets four, three, two or one slot in the campaigns.

That's what happened with Germany pipping Italy for four slots in next season's, because of Italian teams performing miserably. It will take time before England is dislodged. England is still ranked number one, followed by Spain then Germany. Italy was relegated to fourth and thus will provide only three teams next season.

Travelling to Russia in the middle of the league would probably be as bad as if not worse than AC. Basle, Bayer or Lyon for me but knowing the Arsenal's luck would mostly likely be AC or those Russian teams.

Analysts put the figure Man Utd stands to lose at about 20M pounds, judging by how far they have reached in the past 4 season - that is a creative midfielder we could have bought with that money. Still, I think David Gill should coerce Fergie to buy or eventually stamp his foot.

Picture this - first 6 games with Anderson n Cleverley (Cleverley got injured in the 5th game against Bolton)in EPL = Goals scored = 21;Goals conceded = 4;Ronney = 9 goals. The rest, as they say, history.

We have conceded in half of the games where Vidic was missing and kept 8 clean sheets when he played, so we're f***ed, seeing as he'll likely be out for the rest of the season with cruciate ligament knee injury.

I think the only realistic title we should focus on is the EPL and ensure the back 4 is constant - Smalling, Jones, Rio, Fabio/Evra - like someone pointed out, Evra is a liability nowadays and seems to get away with it.

Fergie will play weak sides in Europa and FA 3rd round so we're out of those.

As for CL, I'll support Napoli the underdog for now

I was actually shocked to realize that the last time Rooney scored was in September!!!

@smano, you say Fergie will play weak sides during FA Cup 3rd round. I disagree. Last season's 3rd round, we were paired with Liverpool. It was a strong line up that only missed VDS, Vidic and Rooney, I guess coz of injury. Fergie never played a weak side coz of the magnitude of the tie.

Likewise, I don't expect the same to happen this time round, more so because he knows the fans want something big to nurse their wounds, having seen the team out of the Carling Cup and out of UCL. Against Man City, expect a strong lineup.

The best for Arsenal is just to avoid the Italian teams and the Russians. Napoli and AC are not easy to beat whereas travelling to Russia midweek and to play in extreme weather conditions is not fun.
