The Attorney General’s admission of system failure in our political system is a sub-conscious admission that the ordinary individual is now facing a greater danger than he/she could have imagined.
The 2002 elections ended with great promise; freedom was here at last. But in the end, only the political elite gained. Alliances were shifted radically, leaving the ‘proletariat’ giddy and dumb. The system failed to meet the expectation of the people.
In 2007 things got worse. The people voted; but no one could tell exactly how they voted. People died, property was lost, and even more, faith in the political system faded. The system failed yet again to meet the expectation of the people. But the political elite were still enjoying their perks.
There are now a few days remaining to the 2012 polls and the system is still failing even despite a new constitutional dispensation, a new judicial outlook, and heightened expectation. And even in this latest instance it is still the political elite who seem to be savoring their experience.
We seem to be unconscious of the fact that the system has failed and escalating commitment won’t yield better results, even with the aid of a new constitution.
When the A.G. submitted that there was system failure, he was exonerating himself.
But then who or what is to blame? And what is to be done?
