UPDF Gets More Jets THE MONITOR 18 October 2011 Kampala, Uganda The UPDF on Sunday received additional jet fighters from Russia as it emerged that one of those in the batch shipped in three months ago has been grounded due to engine failure. A highly-placed military source told this newspaper that the Sukhoi Su-30 aircraft was marooned after it sucked a bird into the engine shortly after takeoff from Entebbe military airbase. The September 8 incident infuriated the army that has asked the Civil Aviation Authority to explain how the watchdog’s Bird Hazard & Wildlife Control unit informed the airport’s Control Tower to clear the flight. Witnesses said fire began sparking from one of the jet fighter’s engines following which, the crew was promptly alerted as emergency staff on the ground scrambled to evacuate other planes parked on the apron. A Ugandan pilot, who apparently was test-flying the jet under instructions by a Russian, reportedly switched the engine on-and-off until he landed safely. The affected jet, according to a source we cannot name due sensitivity of the matter, remained grounded for three weeks until Rosoboronexport, the Russian state arms company supplying the Su-30 fighter planes, fixed its engine under an obtaining three-year warrant. http://beegeagle.wordpre...re-sukhoi-su-30mk2-jets/TULIA.........UFUNZWE!

@simonkabz, thanks for sharing! Is this part of the 6? Unlikely its additional. It will take some time for the Ugandans to master flying the Sukhois. Kenya will soon be getting 4th generation jet fighters (more than 30), enabling it to maintain air supremacy in the region....

In my opinion this is a horrendous waste of valuable resources ...it is like buying a Rolls-Royce Phantom, to park it in front of your thatched ( and leaking) house, which is far removed in the rocky hills with no tarmac. There is no security threat in these parts that warrants this kind of hardware. The Russians are smiling all the way to the bank, happy in the knowledge that they have easily confused another short-sighted, egotistical tinpot despot.

@guka mang'uru, If I owned Kenya, I would go for the F16 fighting falcon. Cheaper to acquire, maintain n operate-single engine (f15 uses two f16 engines), most popular platform as of today with over 4500 built. TULIA.........UFUNZWE!

Which type of jets is Kenya bringing in and how would it compare to the Sukhoi? F-15E Strike Eagle. a 4th generational fighter that compares very well with the Sukhoi latest editions (Su-27/30). All weather, day and night fighter, with good history in Iraq & Afhanistan. Speed > Mach 2. Very capable multirole fighter. But is not meant for Al shabo....not for current campaign which could have been quickly wrapped up by the GSU Recce Company. http://www.af.mil/inform...ts/factsheet.asp?id=102

The combat fighter can even refuel mid air; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFlpbiidwbQ
Hope the billions to be spent will not be blown off in a crash like what this guy did (he safely ejected though). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dohKKp0EvTs"Never regret, if its good, its wonderful. If its bad, its experience."

@intel, the Eagle is for a select few; and rather extravagant (a very costly fuel guzzler). Operated by USA, Israel, Saudi, Japan, S. Korea, Singapore. Masonko tupu. It is a protected brand therefore I dnt see much light here.. TULIA.........UFUNZWE!
