according to some twitter feeds @careyeaton it seems the south africans are done with some of its ventures in some parts of africa just a matter of time before they close shop across africa that business model was flawed

if that's true, then am not surprised.

i think it would have been hard to recoup some of the costs they were spending on even adverts, billboards etc.

I also think, that as africans who've learned to consume IT, we've overestimated the ability of other africans to consume technology, especially technology that is not free.

i think the business model of akina mocality and dealfish is bad, but might not be sustainable around here because we don't have the ability to uptake,(pay) for the services

I'm also not surprised because I'm online for most of my conscious hours and I've never once had a need, or ever gotten curious enough to check it up. They should have done research first.

BBI will solve it

As long as credit card penetration in Kenya is low and over 80% of internet traffic is on mobile phone platforms, online marketing will remain unviable (sic)

Wacha Twitter rumours! MIH Internet group have a capital runway for at least 3 years to dedicate to Dealfish, Mocality and Kalahari.

Hmmmn, this surely reminds me of the discussion on Why did True Love and Drum fail? Kenyans and Nigerians in the cross-fire again.

Naspers (Multichoice, Media24) has a seemingly detached approach to business. Make no mistake, they make serious money (Kes 540b, 22% EBITDA), and seem to experiment widely outside their core. Investments must contribute rate of return of 44%.

MIH Kenya and MIH Nigeria (Mocality, Dealfish, Kalahari) are characterized by large spending and no revenues. Yet their staying power cannot be compared to Jeff Bezos (Amazon) who defied all nay-sayers by running a loss-making business for a full 10 years before finding light at the end of the supply chain. Fast-forward to today, Jeff Bezos (no 13) is worth more in USD terms than even Steve Jobs (no 39), and his company has a net profit of over $1b (3.4% margin).

South African businesses always seems to do poorly in Kenya.

I don't know why.. Apart from DSTV, many have come and gone. KDN might be next

MIH must have some deep pockets supporting all those ventures in so many countries with zero revenues
