I'm concerned about an abscess or boil that formed at the site of liitle one's bcg injection. It formed 7 weeks after she was immunized. She is now 10 weeks old and the abscess is still draining-it drains every 3 or so days. Is this normal or does she need treatment with antibiotics? The doctor i saw said she was reluctant to administer an antibiotic since she' still very young and has no fever. She then advised that i wash the area twice a day with salty water. Is there anyone in the medical profession who can give some advice based on their experience? @burningspear, would really appreciate some input to ease my worries

Its nothing to worry about.I am not a doctor but I have kids who have experienced the same.I later learnt that if the BCG does not behave that way,it is considered ineffective and has to be repeated later on.Thats why most if not all people who have had that vaccine have a scar.Your doctor should know this and should explain it to you clearly.Otherwise just take care of the wound as adviced.

Thanks @sanity. That's exactly what the doctor said. My first born did not experience a reaction to that degree though it formed a scar so seeing number 2's reaction caused me to worry. How long does it take to resolve and why should it continue to form pus?

@shak..I think its the body's way of reacting to that vaccine..anyway it should clear in a few days time..but also don't press or try to expel the abcess as in a normal boil....this one will heal by itself .

"BCG is given as a single intradermal injection at the insertion of the deltoid. If BCG is accidentally given subcutaneously, then a local abscess may form (a BCG-oma) that can sometimes ulcerate, and may require treatment with antibiotics. However, it is important to note an abscess is not always associated with incorrect administration, and it is one of the more common complications that can occur with the vaccination. Numerous medical studies on treatment of these abscesses with antibiotics have been done with varying results, but the consensus is that once pus is aspirated and analysed, providing there are no unusual bacilli present, the abscess will generally heal on its own in a matter of weeks." Nurses possess different skills at administering vaccines especially the injectable ones. If you can, have the senior nurses or the matron in MCH give the vaccine. If you let the KMTC student nurses do it...

@uday, how long did it take to heal? It's been 3weeks now and it's still draining

@shak....dont worry, you might end up 'panicking'the baby..my daughter who is 9 months now had a 'serious' abcess after the vaccination unlike her two siblings-theirs was a bit mild. However it cleared on its own after about three weeks..I know its worrying but take heart..so long as the baby doesn't have a fever it means there's no infection(uliza mama yake atakuambia when there is a fever),.anyway you can pay your doc a visit for re-assurance.

Dr. Fred Were: great doctor. Thanks to the wazua community for the reference. Reassured me that the abscess was a good reaction to the vaccine and that there was no need to worry. The swelling is going down and is now healing. And my daughter loved him!
