I'm going to be a first time parent and need advice on where to find affordable baby wear. Also, what essential items are required and in what quantity?

Diapers is one of them! Others, towels, napkins, pins, powder, socks, sweater, etc.

In some shops along biashara street (e.g sunus) they will give you a checklist of what you require. You don't have to buy everything there but it will guide you. However, for newborn its good to buy new clothes although there are expensive, only after one year you can risk Eastleigh and the Kibera market.

depends on type of baby..... baby made (wako) and baby bought(wakununua) have different needs.

For below 2 months buy more brand new cloths for inner cloths (that come into contact with the baby) e.g vests, pants. Outside cloths like sweaters can be second hand. From 3 months mutush is ok so long as they are soft and well washed.
N rem almost all the over 20 yrs guys dint have new cloths in their infant stage,so no big deal, children at times cope better than expected.

@Kasheshi when are you expecting? We could sell you a baby cot that was initially acquired from Eastleigh.

Check out baby cot at Eastleign. Just a wooden one. Make sure it has drawers. Price ranges between 1K-2K (2nd hand) or 2K-4K for new.
Go to super market and buy a high-density cot mattress ksh450 and mosquito net ksh550.

@Kasheshi,bear in mind the fact that newborns grow so fast. So dont spend all the money buying lots of stuff, coz in like two months, the baby will be twice the weight, they wont be fitting, buy stuff gradually and stay away from mtumba if you can until the baby is over 6 months. Personally i don't understand why all the 'warning' about mtumba. At least 70% of new born kids wear mtumbas and they turn out great. If you happen to get some nice clothes especially the camera ones don't hesitate to buy. All you need to do is soak the clothes in jik and dettol and rinse with sta - soft. By the way some unique baby wear can only be found in Mtumba. Most of what you will find in Biashara street is more of Kenya uniform. You can consider both options and depending on taste and preference you will know which way to go.

yeah, you should mix the sizes, some clothes should be slightly bigger to cater for those months ahead when the baby will have grown and there is nothing wrong with mitumba,if you stick to just new clothes from the shop you will be suprised at how much you will spend eg a romper from biashara would cost you like 300 bob but from toy mkt you get very nice rompers at btwn 20 and 50 bob which also last longer than the new ones.So long as you disinfect them well before the baby wears they are very much okay.
Everything happens for a reason.

Btwn 1-3 months Sunus on Biashara for start-up clothes. After that Toy for tough, long lasting mtush. If your kid is on formula - sunus. Forget supermarkets the difference can be up to 200/- a tin. Daipers - My kid always got a rash after wearing Daipers so we changed to Huggies and all's well. We get from Sunus as supermarkets are too expensive.
