Sulphates in wine (beer?)-What is the effect when consumed?

I recently noticed that most wine labels indicate that 'this item contains sulphates'. My guess is that this is a warning because of some consequences that sulphates have when consumed. Anybody care to elaborate?

I believe you meant sulphites. Sulphites may occur naturally in wines during the fermentation process. However they are also used as preservatives in wines. Sulphite is a known allergen.

just a preservative in wines but not present in beer
