13km-16.5km to the litre depending on servicinng,drive style,right tyres and pressure and most importantly right plugs DENSO K16PR-U11,NGK BKR5E-11 or NGK irridium IX BKR5EIX-11

The car is a Mits. Lancer running on a 4G15 engine (without MIVEC). One with MIVEC Inside is even better.

@Njunge,ati tractor-that one cracked me up. Sorry to the guy who is aking about diesel. But I also agree,diesel ni ya HCVs ama cruise ships.

If only pple knew about some serious diesel engines,then one wouldn't think of it as a smoky tractor/lorry fuel.

E.g. VW,AUDI,Skoda - try their 1.9 TDi salon cars - they never smoke unless u ignore service,they consume much like a 1000cc vitz and are as powerful as any Subaru turbo. Ask anyone who is driving a diesel VX (4200cc) or Prado (3000cc). They do well and are just as fast as the petrol counterpart. Technology has become better,let people not dismiss diesel coz of how it was built earlier.....

As I keep saying - open ur mind,research and check our various reviews on the net,wikis etc,try to hear it from 'the horse's mouth' pple who drive these cars will tell you.

Thanks on that. I think people are yet to understand the benefits of a diesel powered

engine,moreso one that is turbo-charged. There are pretty good ones like the V W 2.5T

turbo charged Passat's as well as the Skodas. You cant beat these cars in fuel efficiency

as well as speed.

what you state sounds interesting....

but from my ignorant stand point,am told what you save from the fuel consumption

will well be used when servicing the car...that these cars cost more to service than the

petrol fueled engines...is that so? if not educate me?

You will be surprised to know that diesel engine service is cheaper than petrol engines

since you only change the oil,oil and fuel filters. The air cleaner varies with the model but

most go upto 40,000 Kms,and the engine coolant another 200,000 Kms. All this adds up to;

i. Oil - 2,700 ii. Fuel & Oil Filters - 2,000 iii. Air Cleaner - 2,000 iv. Coolant - 1,000

There is no change in plugs,atleast until they are gone,which means another 3-4 years.

Diesel engines are very economical so long as they are turbo charged,with regular

service intervals of 5,000 Km.

The whole of Europe has turned to HDi and TDi diesel engines with particulate filters,they are taxed the lowest since they are economical and produce low emmissions.In kenya we have very poor quality diesel with a lot of sulfur which corrodes the engine.So until our refineries start producing real low sulfur diesel,go for petrol.
The utimate goal of investing is to buy low sell high;if we re-write this core equation in psychology terms it becomes buy fear sell greed.

i also feel that though petrol and diesel are same for cruising,the difference comes in acceleration/takeoff/kuachwa kwa mataa. can @sigi be honest and admit that huwa anaachwa kwa mataa.

You've cracked me up ati huwa anaawachwa kwa mataa.

I can tell that you're yet to drive one of these Skoda's and V W's that are turbo

diesel powered. You wont believe it,but the acceleration of a Skoda or V W turbo diesel

is light years from an ordinary Toyota.

The injector pump should NEVER be touched ! It comes with a life time gurantee !!!

One is best advised to buy a new one straight from Japan,instead of going to Grogon

or to some Kalasinga for caliberation.

@Sheep,let's forget our refinaries abilities for a moment,we are not even sure if they

have any of these plans on the table...

njunge2000 clearly puts it that it's not costly to service...but how about the long term

effects of corrosion from our variant of diesel?

Today's engines are like flea-beaten mongrels; they are allergic to high pressure baths. There are very few guys in Nairobi who can wash Merc,Bmw,Sub,(yani high performance engines) they will screw them up big time.

Turbocharged Diesel engines can deliver hell at ur doorstep especially once the turbocharger seals and housing get worn.
The turbine blades get worn/accumulate carbon compounds unevenly resulting in an unbalanced mass at the turbine shaft.
Unbalanced mass = Wearing of seals and housing = anew turbocharger (tens of thousands of cash,if u r lucky)

From the way things look,inspite of all the information available on the internet which u probably all have ready on ur phone,we still have ignorance being displayed here.

Please visit either wikipedia or howstuffworks.com and read about TDi and HDi esp. if you can get ur hands on the VW implementation - am sure you all know now that VW own and make engines for AUDI and Skoda....

TDi is great technology. The japanese still have loads of petrol engines on small cars to sell,and so we,the dumping site can never hope to get for example a diesel passat from jap - at least not as easily as u will get the petrol model,same with CDi benzes,TDi Audis etc. But search for these in UK,utaona! Ni plenty,and diesel engines tend to run almost forever. The one guy I know in london driving a 1.9 TDi AUDI has done 150,000 miles already,and the cars still drives like new. He still does over 52MPG with the traffic in that wretched city. Things are changing fast and we better be ready to chage with the times......holding on too much is just by the brokers to retain value of the contraptions we are currently keeping on the road.

Mechanics,I repeat,fear everything they are not familiar with. They will tell u all sorts of stories just to convince u to keep the petrol they are used to.

Don't we have anyone here with a diesel prado,VX,Passat or VW?

Dont take my word for it,research it in readiness for next time u invest in a car. Also,consider importing from Europe now that the currency is fair. You will be surprised.

thanks for giving me a different view. it is very nice hearing it from the wearer of the shoe. a lot of bad things have been said about diesel engines here and elsewhere. you actually stimulated me to start doing some research....this is a link to the first page i have found:

it would seem that the things that have been said,though exagerated sometimes,have some factual basis. look especially at the summary table of stats near the bottom. the diesel is slower (0-100kph) by a whopping 1.5secs! but it performs beautifully on the highway (just as i thought). it beats the petrol on fuel economy,but not by much,and btw the price differnce (diesel vs petrol) is not much these days. NB: the petrol was manual and turbo while the diesel was Auto (+turbo)....might explain the lesser consumption of the petrol

so far....yes,diesel drinks less(spirit of the thread)....but there are trade offs

I drive an Audi A4 1.9L TDi (the B6 version) and it has not given me any trouble for the past 2.5 years!

As Sigiriri says, it is still drives like new for a 2004 model! I've endevoured to ensure it is serviced by a professional after every 5,000km! It doesn't guzzle and though I don't know the exact figures I believe it does 12km/l!

Good people,

Actually all my cars are diesel powered and I would not have it any other way. I have a 2.2l Toyota 3C engine. superb car on performance and consumption. The other is a 2.5L TDi Landrover engine. This is the bomb! Actually I do not inderstand how someone can afford to run a petrol engine in this city traffic . The annoying part is when guys switch off engines when traffic stops. ati gari inakunywa... mann!!! I know diesel can idle the whole day with nil effect.

Anyway guys,everyone has their preference.
