The use of short codes over GSM network... The kind that you find at the back page of the Daily Nation, or on Television asking you to SMS for receive bits of information. I know someone makes money from this.

Agreed.

In a market where nearly 90% of phones are not "smartphones", USSD makes sense to deliver certain advanced services. We have developers a plenty to do this...its all down to finding out which apps are needed, which third parties could benefit (banks, hospitals, schools, etc) and if there exists adequate demand by various constituencies of users to merit the app and charging for such a service...
