When RAO's ministry demolished properties in 2004 for the bypasses and some more were done last yr,nobody was compensated. Infact, many got charged for the demolitions! And they all had title deeds...

What is special about the Mau land holders many who bought from politicians who got land for free?

@Mainat,

I disagree. We should 'compensate' them. 14 years @ kamiti with hard labour,or a fine equivalent to the money they made from sale of timber and charcoal.

If you bought the land from a politician who got it for free but the gava of the day initiated and okayed the transaction, then surely you should be compensated.

We all work hard and save to build homes for a family,if all your hard work is taken away by the gava that should protect you, then where is the justice.

But those on the list who got free land should be compensated with nothing since they paid nothing.

I've noticed the youth in particular coming in to a workplace with a completely outsized notion of their own value and importance... just a thinly-veiled arrogance. May be the credit crunch induced recession is whats needed to remind us all about the value of hard work.... By Anonymous

@ maina

its all about politix of numbers....bypass victims,100 and a total loss of ksh 3b worth of real estate investment (houses) and mau forest,20,000 and a total loss of kshs 20m (development on the land as land was free)...translating these in terms of votes, who is important? you guessed it right!!!

Obi-You missed my pt. Why were the demolishment victims not compansated?

Kaigangio-you can see the irrational logic. Compensate for Ksh20m but not the for economic impacting Ksh3bn...

As correctly noted here,RAO has personally set a precedent of not compensating victims (knowing or otherwise) of irregular dealings with the government. When his voting block is affected, worst still sell them for a new one, suddenly he throws this precedent out of the window, not for the benefit of tax paying Kenyans who will be billed for this to the tune of hundreds of millions if not into the billions but for his personal political mileage.

However, ignorance is popular and he is the most popular politician! Let us not confuse his pursuit for Statehouse with feigned interest in the well being of Kenyans.

While empathizing with the poor fellows who were pushed there by politicians,I regret that compensation in monetary form does not suffice. Uncontrolled compensation would open a can of worms as several other pple would demand for the same over past evictions eg the Aberdares,Mt. Kenya,Kakamega forest,Mt. Elgon, bypasses etc.

....Compensate Moi and the other grabbers? NO,NO NO !

Did anyone catch the preposterous statement by isaac ruto yesterday in parliament? He said that if govt burns the houses of those settled in the Mau then they should not be blamed if they do the same to other innocent peoples properties in retaliation. If that is not incitement then i don't know what is. Why the hell are we pampering these fools?!

Whose houses are they going to burn? I thought this is a national issue and not particular individuals... plus do they expect kibs and PM to go with match sticks to burn the houses? seriously? are these the leaders we kill each other for? so the guys will go burn other innocent people's homes, and gain what from that? Is this guy a law maker when he does not even understand the laws already in place - like those regarding private property?

The point is simple, the government - correction - the tax payers - should NOT compesate a single soul before they are evicted from Mau. The best the government should do is to assist those who bought the land from the politicians to recover their money. I know the justice system works very slowly in Kenya, but believe you me,if the government has the will to follow up the guys who subdivided the land and sold it,within one year they will have helped recoup the money! That money ended up with individuals. Why should tax payers be the ones to carry this budden while the fat cats seat on their loot? Bure kabisa!
Does that mean I can grab any public land provided I sell it before the reposession process begins? That way the guy I sold to gets compesated,I keep my money and everyone is happy. Apart from the ka-small nuisance called the tax payer!!!!
Never count on making a good sale. Have the purchase price be so attractive that even a mediocre sale gives good returns.

Those occupying the land should infact pay for the rehabilition of what they spoilt. Where is michuki..

A likely impossibility is always preferable to an unconvincing posibility.
