Apparently, most specialist doctors in Kenya hit at least 1M Kshs monthly! Why do most of these medics still choose to leave the country???? In some eastern European countries doctors would be lucky if they hit 100K Kshs monthly. I also think Nairobi is definitely top 5 in Africa, in terms of medical care. Even in western europe 1m kshs is good money.

You will realise that money is not the only factor to consider in life. Kenyan healthcare is in a sorry state, look at the per capita expenditure and compare with other countries. Our hospitals are empty shells with no medicine, poorly trained staff and no facilities. You will happily collect the millions if you do not wish to make a difference in people's lives. After making the money, you have to play hide and seek with the carjacker, burglar, taxman, policemen expecting bribes, power-rationing, erratic income and disorder. Chances are you never get to enjoy the money you make. When doctors go overseas, they get an assured safety, less corruption, family time and world class training. that is what many people want.
On a different note, many doctors leave the country to get a better training and also improve their lives. Yes kenya may be in the top 10 in Africa, but the conditions in hospitals are dire. If you speak to doctors in postgraduate training in KNH, they rarely see their seniors. They are abused and misused by their seniors. Once exposed to different systems, you cannot stand the mediocrity of the kenyan healthcare system. Trust me, I have experience in Kenya and Europe.

Would you care to share your source of information about doctors earnings in Nairobi? Particularly what proportion of all specialists get >KES 1 million. I don't agree that most of the hospitals that these consultants work in are well equipped. The reason I say this is that the health outcomes, using whichever health parameter, for these private hospitals, though better than our public hospitals, are still among the worst in the world.

To lead a quality life, there is much much more to it than having the money.

On the other hand, professionally, health care in Kenya as you mentioned is in tatters complete tatters -it's highly commercialized and there is no holistic vision for the entire industry.

You would be surprised to learn that a country like the USA looks up to countries like Costa Rica and Cuba in matters related to health care.

The average life expectancy in Costa Rica is about 79, Kenya 54.9. (All based on 2009 statistics).

These Latin American countries have managed to convert the industry into some form of healthcare tourism industry.

More importantly, their systems are citizen centric -high quality, available countrywide and low cost.
