Blue screen...dumping physical memory

Compaq Presario CQ61, purchased from SCOM in Dec 2009

It has been doing this rather too many times lately... What causes it and what can I do about it.

PLEASE DO NOT tell me to buy another one, I have no money!

You can try 'taking it back' to an earlier date when it was working well using the system restore feature on the start menu

i presume it came loaded with the OS and you dnt have the installation disk...to start with thats bad...since you bought it in 2009 it warranty is dead if amnt wrong. the best thing you can do is the following

1. Press F2 when booting up the computer
2. Select 'Config', then 'Serial ATA (SATA)'
3. Change controller option to 'Compatibility' / 'IDE'

that shld do the trick...

LEASE DONOT buy another laptop , lol. Its just a software issue..

This is also often caused by a recent software installation, that may have corrupted your configuration. think back and try remember if there is anything you may have recently installed and uninstall it.
The System Restore will also work

Crashes can be caused by bad drivers or some of the more system intensive programs (some graphics stuff like Maya, some versions of Flash etc etc). It hasn't always been like this, so there is a time when this became noticeable,..try and recall what time that was. You might find that this has been triggered soon after by something you installed, to eliminate the problem you just need to isolate and remove that software

it normally gives an error message and code/number when it dumps it, you can use that to debug.....something like
*** STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC00000005, 0x804EF844, 0xF89463FC,0x00000000).....once u have that, you can easily debug it.....

This explanation by quicksand is correct!

On the other hand, if you have not installed knowingly or unknowingly any software lately, this could be a sign of some hardware failure. You probably need to let the machine to cool if it has been overheating. In addition, check that your working surface allows for proper heat conduction from the machine.

In the case that you are totally unlucky, then some piece of hardware has given up, including the motherboard. Easy way to check could be by replacing the memory unit and hard-disk.

System restore points only goes back to 16/Aug/2011. But the problem started much earlier than that.

How do I get older restore points? I have already ticked the "Show points older that 5 days" button

Try starting the computer in safe mode (restart the comp and press f8 key before the operating system loads). Then you can do the system restore while in safe mode and see whether you will be able to select dates earlier than 16th august

its called the BSoD...Blue Screen of Death!

caused by hardware/software conflict..
Ensure u install the correct drivers distributed with the laptop

Could be loose connections esp if you carry your laptop around alot. Refix the memory etc into slots

Q2: Yes It came pre-installed; I have not changed the OS


If you can access a Win Vista installation cd n upgrade the version of the win to a more stable one it will fix your problem.am very sure there were some uncompatibility of some software u installed with the OS.
But,the best thing to do now is to upgrade to windows 7-proff or ultimate!
