Am toying with the idea of doing a goat milk project.

Has anybody here tried this? How's the market? What are the good breeds? Input in terms of cash, time/energy - hoping they don't require much babysitting as the case appears to be with chicken ...

the price of one mature dairy goat averages at around 12k.

output per day is about one litre.

cost per litre at the farm farm gate is 80bob.

am no expert on breeds though.

I visited a dairy goat farmer recently. He stocks the Alpine breed. He gets 1 to 1.5lts per day per goat which he sells at ksh 150. Alpines cost 20k. According to him, it is not possible to get output of 4lts thats usually reported in the media. A buddy of mine gave me contacts of a farmer in Nakuru who keeps toggenburg breed. I called the farmer who says max toggenburg output is 2.5lt...i think its a worthy venture but one needs to visit farmers to get a realistic picture

Someone kindly confirm this; I hear the reason why goat milk is rarely available in supermarkets is because hospitals have a high demand for it.

Our cultural attitude to change inorder for goat milk to have a larger market . Where I come from it is foolhardy for a grown man or woman to be found squatting to milk a goat.

Thats what people claim.

I will call 5 hospitals and report back tomorrow.

Was in a workshop where they said Nairobi Hospital takes 120 Litres daily at 180/ltr.

The taste is a bit "yak" too and not many pple like it. You need like 3 goats to get 1 okombe of milk and add that to the squatting you have to do to milk a goat!

Aii Gathige!

You can improvise the pen so that inakaa kwa Gorofa then you milk when standing.

True the taste is yak.I tried the one at Nakumatt and did not like it.

You can get a litre or two but from those special breeds.
