Please advise:
Am Planning to start incubating and egg business, Would like to hear from anyone who has tried this or is in the business, and what you would advise before I source for an incubator from china.
Also would like to know if its a profitable business.

@suekim, I am not familiar with this on the ground but i would imagine if you could approach women groups ,this could provide a healthy source for your day old chicks. They are getting all these funds to start businesses.

I would also think that if you checked outlying areas such as Kitengela, Rongai, Ruai etc, a lot of people are setting up small biashara's rasing kukus.

On another note, can someone explain how you can sell one month old Kienyeji fresh chicken for sh 300..would appreciate, thanks. I think that is what they are called but i could be wrong.

With many farmers selling off their birds and closing shop due to the high feed costs and low egg prices being offered there is going to be a shortage of eggs and chicken to eat. Then the prices will go up. IMHO a tray should be sold for at least 280.

Feed costs is the "make or break" factor in this business as discussed earlier in the thread. The current scenario where there are so many small-scale farmers doing Chicken small time only generates money for the feed manufactures, agro-vets and brokers leaving nothing for the farmers. One way out would be for small scale farmers to form a coop and get into own feed making, market their products through a pool and even have their own hatchery.

Why has Unga feeds increased the price of feeds again to 2850, just when we started selling eggs at 260? this means price has to go up by 25 bob to realize the profit. so consider selling at 280.. in the next 2 wks or so. Am waiting for Pembe to announce their new prices and i will raise the price of eggs accordingly to ensure 10 trays of eggs should buy 70kg bag of layers.

@ Mwamaina

The MAIN REASON why feeds costs are high is that humans and animal feeds compete for the same inputs. When there is no Unga ya Ugali it means there is no maize for animal feeds. That makes most companies compromise on quality hence low output yet they maintain prices.

Way out is to look for alternatives to use in making animal feeds. A friend wanted to experiment using Amaranthus seeds buy getting the right quantity was not possible. Other alternatives would be to grow yellow maize specifically to do animal feeds.

good people. today is slightly over 5 months since i put in a tidy 100k into this just to get a hang of it. Today got my first tray.. which was kinda interesting coz we had a bash. my experience. Feed is way too expensive... and the numbers dont look good. Here are the figures... now where the hell is the mullah/ $$$ meant to come from? Tha experience is still worth it.

CostxqtyxKesx Months=Total
Purchase 150x100.00x1=15,000.00
Feed 70kg 5x2,800.00 x5= 70,000.00
Vaccines 3x200.00 x1=600.00
Sawdust 2x70.00x5= 700.00
Power 1x 1,200.00x5= 6,000.00
water 1x 300.00 x5= 1,500.00
Feeders 8x450.00 x1= 3,600.00
Coop constr 1x2,500.00 x1= 2,500.00
Recorded = 99,900.00

Insights.
Two died due by drowning
one crushed by door
five ended on dinner table
The entire flock to dispose during xmas
Eggs internal intake
ready for project 2

This time people are leaving the business temporarily due to the high cost of feeds. The quality of all the feeds at the moment seems to have been compromised (including unga). All the same from you venture, if you attain 90% production and sell each tray at 260/=, you will make about 200/= per day.

I think we have a very wrong idea of business in this country. We do everything short term. The minute we make a few losses, we start running away looking for alternatives instead of trying to find better ways to sustain our businesses. Then immediately we walk away, the tide turns and those who we left behind make huge returns. The we run back in....ABK!

We need to know that you invest in a business even five years before you can start to reap anything from it. If you are not ready for that. keep your money in the account!
