is a volcano waiting to erupt.......

so how would you invite investors... tourists... to visit......

an island...

where there is raw magma..... sipping through the cracks...

bellowing smoke....???

another Turkwell...... Nyayo Bus..... Grand legacy..... Anglo-Fleecing.....Golden-Air.....

Now that you've identified a problem,do you intend to do something about it?

@ Maggigi ..spot on.

India had one.....the 'Incredible India' one which was running on CNN.....but did not work out well as they had hoped...reason is that a country does not need pretty and expensive ads to show the world what they have got....or how good it is......stuff like the Pakistanis-Indians clashing and the recent Mumbai attacks showed how much India still had issues and yet the Indian govt acted like it did not.

Kenya does not need branding and the PR offices in Washington....so long as there are issues like IDPs and clashes and political wrangling...the branding is a futile exercise in itself.

@ Real Shaft

I disagree one does not brand a product but an experience and this is readily available in Kenya.

@Xtina

Please erase your statement before someone sees it...meanwhile am trying to pull out stats that were published that show the effect of that add alone in regards to toursim numbers.

I strongly believe we need to Brand Kenya the world over not as a destination as many people would like to think...and most importantly at this time. Its is no surprise my colleagues still think Kenya is not safe as seen on the the world media in early last year..or how else did guys know we were butchering each other..we just need to use the same platforms and the results will be immediate..

Our problems are not unique to us..countries that have had soaring toursim numbers and have issues to the core as well,Egypt and South Africa..SA politicians have kulad the cash for developing a railway metro in readiness for world cup...and now you don not want to know the peples feelings regarding Zuma. Egypt same story ..they were to develop a railway system and were even given money by EU to buy the coaches from Germany, whi ch the politicains decided is too expensive and decided to source them from China..they were given cash for 5 coaches one was bought and came with chinese manuals and it stalled after 1 month...so moral of story all our stories are more or less the same.but others react differently to their situations..

@ Magigi,u hit the nail on the head

@ Ric Dees. The kind of (re)branding that you are talking about will just be an avenue to swindle kenyans of their public funds. I recall in February this year,Nigeria too was keen on rebranding ( Nigerians have a bad image worldwide, and we are closely following as Kenyans !) The Nigerian citizens there were opposed to this initiative since it would have loop holes for looting of their money (same holds for Kenya)

Our politics needs to mature and all things will fall in place. Then we shall not have to talk of (re)branding as if it were a service or product being (re)launched

So what does this outfit do??

most of the most marketable names with kenyan origin are being patented elswhere

safari went long time........

kikoi followed......

am not sure whether kiondo is still available to us..........

now dstv is doing something with harambee and nyayo.......

are these names/words not supposed to make kenya unique??

When tourists open our blogs, online newspapers and other sites, they see politicians like Ruto war mongering and think Kenya is on the brink of another civil war. We really need stability politically. Dimwit Politicians are poisoning the business atmosphere and scaring many potential investors away!

I agree with RicDees. We need some serious rebranding. Politics will always be a thorn in any country, moreso corruption in developing ones.

So many people - workmates, clients, frds - have been asking me about Kenya and visiting Masai Mara, but after recently seeing the violence in the media, they opt for other destinations. For instance, last month my colleague was just about to visit Kenya, then there was this ad running for like a month on a Dubai radio station about visiting Athens (which also got me interested),and the next thing he changed his mind and went to Europe. Luckily,my boss decided otherwise and is currently in Masai Mara,n colleagues are really waiting for his opinion once he's back. I beleive such a case would be made stronger if theres was an aggressive branding roadshow.

I've spoken to the Embassy guys i know, but they're like 'the Tourism Board was here the other day doing a feasibility study,etc....' I Read: Enjoying taxpayers money in hotels. If these guys are serious,Kenya can be a destination of choice for many - investors and tourists.
