I do not really know where you people are getting information on banned products.

As @Robinhood said, its the Taiwan batch that contained harmful products of di-isodecyl phthalate but not whole range of augmentin.

Augmentin is the original preparation of amoxycillin and clavulanic acid and neither of the two ingredients contain di-isodecyl phthalate.Augmentin and its generic ie amoklavin, julmentin, clavam, enhancin etc is very safe and very potent in the treatment of upper respiratory tract infections including pneumonia.Actually, its one of the best and 1st line for pneumonia related cases.

Zinnat is the original of cefuroxime axetil,a 2nd generation cephalosporin.
Again, this product is very safe and has not been banned anywhere. Its potency in urinary tract infections and to some extent URTI and LRTI makes it a good product to eliminate those bacteria in the rate you have never seen.
Therefore,Zinnat and its generics ie proximexa,Zamur,Cefuzime etc is very safe !!

I hope this puts matter to rest.I would like to reiterate that the two products are very safe and potent/effective in eliminating those bacteria.

@Njoki & Ray,
Dr.Wafula is the one who comes on that TV programme (recently he appeared talking about T.B)and i can tell you he is one of the best. He is normally based at Aga khan Hospital.

I did know about this story of Zinnat & Augmentin being banned! I wonder what is the long term damage considering its still being used (and healing).

@burning, thanks for clearing that up. I understand that these antibiotics have different strengths depending on the severity of the disease. What is the recommended dosage in the initial stages of an infection? The doctors i've seen usually prescribe the 250mg syrup for my 2 year old daughter for 5 days whenever she gets a throat infection yet i know there's the 125mg dose. How strong is too strong?

Took my son there for a rotavirus treatment costed me an arm,I was given the same prescription which costed me a fraction in a catholic dispensary I had dismissed as incompetent.

One thing I learnt is take your kid to a mission hospital or a good govt hospital these private hospitals are expensive and offer in some instances substandard services.

The dosage depends on body weight and condition being treated rather than the age in children.
The usual dose is 125mg twice daily or 10mg/kg twice daily to a maximum of 250mg daily for children less than 2 years. For those 2 years and above, the dosage increases to 250mg twice daily or 15mg/kg twice daily to a maximum of 500mg daily.
This works well for otitis media, mild to moderate LRTI (Lower respiratory tract infections)and even severe cases of LRTI and if pneumonia is suspected.

Therefore, the prescription to your kid was so much in order and was the correct dosage.

About paedriatic issues, I would advise that whichever hospital you go to, have your own doctor? Can you imagine taking your car to a different machanic evry time it coughs?

Now I'm not trying to compare your son (s) or daughter (s) to some piece of metal with rubber rollers.

The satellite clinics of some of these "highly ranked" hospitals are actually no go zones for seasoned parents, especially the one at Madaraka. You will almost always only find rookies (new parents) taking their kids to this place.

Other very useful options
1.Have a paeditrician of your own (I know this sound elitist but its your choice) either at Doctors plazas (be it KNH, AKUN or NBI). I recall that me and my siblings were seen by the same doctor till age 22 and she knew each one us beyond just "where does it hurt?".

2.Try some mission hospitals like St. Mary's, Tenwek, Mukumu, Fatima or Kijabe -lets not assume everyone lives in Nairobi. I know people who take time of to drive or bus westwards to Kijabe to take their children to hospital (Most insurance companies will however not pay if you seek services from these hospitals, despite the fact that they arev very affordable to most).

3 The AKUN has a dedicated paeditrician wing complete with its own reception. I have found the attention given at this wing quite good all the times I have taken my dear little destroyer there.

All else is luck and please don't use what you google to antagonise doctors. It pays to be calm and ask what every procedure or drug is meant to respond to..Do it with respect, the doctors will most likely oblige.
