YU 2 YU calls is free from 6am-6pm. 3/= to other networks. No subscription, No terms and conditions. (I hav just confirmed it by calling free to my taxi driver-the only YU no. in my dual sim phone.) As a safaricom die hard this offer is too good to be loyal. call it whatever you want,but I have just called my mum and other regular callers and asked them to change their line to YU when they are calling me. If it last a month I will definitely have saved a lot. Free on-net calls is NOT a new thing in this market. Its been done by all operators at different times, l had actually assumed YU had tried their hands on it too. I am surprised from these discussions, it appears like this is the first time they are doing it. Their action could excite the market for a short while, but l dont see it being significant. Safcom have 1/- on-net in near similar timeframes. I think you they have an idle network; so rather than keep running it (opex costs) while its idle, they have resorted to driving dunda tune subscriptions and make money somewhat, however little; in the hope they could get the numbers too. But with 3G ruled out entirely and just EDGE for data, l think this is the very last kick of a dying horse. The laudable is more often than not rendered laughable by overclaim

Also thought I saw an advert for a yu double SIM phone for 2,000 why did they have to wait so long? if they had done this back in the days of supa ongea they would have achieved something.

The previous free offers had a subscription of about 10/= a day which restricted its uptake. This strategy is a killer in that it has no preconditions with chinese phones flooding the market it will be a matter of time b4 its subscribers shoot up. VAT is charged on the value provided, not the amount paid, so I suspect they will pay something, unless they can prove that 1. it is a promotion, 2. it is to everybody (non-discriminatory)and 3. has a definite time frame. This offer seems to meet the first two conditions. In terms of the amount to be assessed, KRA is at liberty to determine a fair price to levy the VAT on. I'm not sure how they treat the excise and mobile taxes. Regarding excess capacity, I think Yu rides on airtel's network, if they pay a flat fee, then they could have excess capacity. If they pay as they go......
