One key thing about infrastructure is that it opens an area for development.. When roads, water, electricity, hospitals, schools are available, businesses sprout to provide services to the population which translates to employment etc.. these don't have only to be malls, it can be any form of business...

Education also plays a critical role in providing the required resources..

"Outsourcing" is as a result of delivery and quality of service provided.. Can you compare the work the Chinese are doing and what local guys deliver? its about getting the best value for money (not that I support it)

Interesting thoughts. Lets not underestimate the impact of infrastructure on development. it has a big multiplier effect on the economy. I need to read the whole vision document to get make a clear critique.

Absolutely, we don't underestimate the impact infrastructure could have to an economy. The cost of doing business will be reduced and entry barriers lowered etc.

If you look closely at what is going on in South Africa you will realize that having good infrastructure is not the ultimate solution. At least not for the normal citizen. Their government continues to battle alarming crime levels and trying to manage xenophobia (fear of foreigners).

It's the learned foreigners who come to seize the business opportunities while the locals get relegated to small time casual employment.

My hope is that our Kenyan government develops a more compelling vision for its people than subjecting them to small casual jobs.

I'm in the process of writing an article on this matter. I'll keep you posted if interested.
