As a Kenyan, I have been keenly following this Vision 2030 program and so far I somehow find it hard to crystallize how the objectives will be met.

It's fine to have a super highway with 12-lanes, in a normal functioning country the roads are that smooth all the time.

However, could you explain how the life of the people living Mathare North(located just next to the new highway) will change after the project is completed?

You need not just look at the highway.. research on the number of business that have taken a keen interest in setting up shop there.. this traslate to better services closer to their homes, saves the hussle of going to town etc.. translates to saving and better conditions for them

I've actually taken a wider perspective on this matter. The article I wrote (link provided in my firs post) tries to paint a big picture of my reasoning why this is not a sustainable model. The highway was just an example.

The people living in Mathare North (btw no offense here, just picked the place for illustration purposes)are not living under those conditions because there are no services such as banks near them. Even if the bank came to their houses what would they be sending to the bank?

employment will also follow suit.. If a mall/supermarket are setup as was suggested.. at least a number of people will also get jobs.. and will slowly improve the quality of life

I am compelled to total agreement with the boomerang and lend a new angle. In my opinion, Kenya should be working for itself and within itself to deliver the baby at 'term 2030'. We have institutions of higher learning churning engineers in their hundreds and we can only participate in our own infrastructure development as casual laborers. Local industries & intellectual capacities are at a loss for having not participated in such a crucial undertaking as Thika road. Vision 2030 is not something to be outsourced as we sit back in our hammocks marveling at Chinese ingenuity, but to be actively participated in by Kenya as the largest stakeholder.

When we are talking about national level operations, the targeted scope is not a "number" of people but rather we take into considerations generations upon generations. With your mindset, how many malls do you have to open in order for all the people in the densely population areas to be employed gainfully.

Interesting thoughts. Lets not underestimate the impact of infrastructure on development. it has a big multiplier effect on the economy. I need to read the whole vision document to get make a clear critique.
