Hi All,

What would be the costs of setting up a small wireless internet solution provider using any fibre company as the backbone.
Size of area is similar to nairobi west.

What would be the best equipment to use and the cost implications apart from the CCK yearly charges?

Location: Nairobi
these might be some factors to consider:
the technology u r going to use, wireless; radio, cable, wifi,
the topography of the area is another issue, trees and high building might block signal if using wireless.
u need a technical person to sort out clients problems,
each new customer will use bandwidth so factor that when starting.
others issues u can sort out as you go

@veteran.

The topolgy is flat and tallest building is like 4 stories, that y i could compare the place to Nairobi west.
Want to use any wireless technology that supports authentication, billing platform and bandwidth management.
The system should also be scalable to accommodate Video conferencing, IP surveillance and VoIP.

@ejaab, in my opinion the place to go to for what you're trying to do is right here in Nairobi. There is a local engineering establishment that works with a world class and leading business in the US that can set you up with a WISP at a very low-cost.

Their solution is based on hardware manufactured using low-cost readily available materials and open-source software - and is aimed at providing a low-cost wireless solution for the developing world. One of the products that they've designed and have launched internationally is a low-cost antenna that can do long-range unidirectional as well as short range omni-directional links at a fraction of the price that you'd find commercially.

They can set up a WISP very easily and have demo'd a WISP network in Mountain View Estate in Nairobi using bandwidth from one of the commercial providers. If you're interested, email me at muchno@gmail.com, I'll give you more details and link you to them.
