Stories of success can be real without other stories behind them. And of course(we all know this) while starting out you have to be a frugal spender. I know of this dude who sells shoe laces, dyes, shoe polish and such stuff on a 1m*1m space at Gikomba. If you have been to Gikomba, you must have seen the guys who sell such stuff, at the shoe stalls. They are stationed in the middle of the roads. With his income he has opened a polythene shop bought a pick up. They were orphaned at an early age and his brother had to go to an orphanage. However he is bright and scored highly. He had the choice to go to Starehe or Alliance. They could only afford Alliance and raised the money for school fees and shopping with his brother. Luckily he got a scholarship but they chose Alliance since they could afford it in case the sponsor pulled out.He is doing well, and planning to construct rental houses on a plot her mother had bought before she died.

@tony stark

you are right in both your observations that 1) Mbogo and similar 'lords' have an about 30% headstart comapred to those employed on equal income. They should pay tax.
The question is, how? the turnover tax method is very hard to enforce esp in the informal economy that we are.
and 2)Wazua, like the market place described by @poundfoolish earlier in this post has all sorts of people. Majority seem to have read 'War and Peace' only in their formative years.
Appreciation of satire is very low.

I invite those 'serious, black and white' ones to www.gawker.com and particularly the comments made by readers on political/ social-cultural/ economic matters.

Had to read this. Inspiring.

There's this guy i met in 2007. He had a small kiosk where he sold fruits and makaa.Now the guy owns two 'ask for transport' pick-ups and still runs his fruits and makaa business.

My other eye sees a newspaper vendor who doubled as a collecting agent for Mungiki subscriptions from Matatu's..It happens in Nairobi.
Though Mbogo Might be an exception to the practice

NO! NO! NO! NO!

He is not in that kind of stuff!

Do the math: if you sell 1,000 newspapers daily and make 3bob from each.. that's 3k pd... 90k pm... and you live in mukuru where rent is 2k ... why wouldn't you be able to buy a car worth 200k... which then adds another 2k to your income daily.....

Please don't be a sceptic; these things are possible!

Applause A beautiful success story. I understand just across the road in South B is a similar story. The propriator of Sana Sana also used to sell newspapers right about the same spot. I've played pool and held conversations with honarable members there. A time may come when you might have to book an appointment to court the audience of one, Mr Mbogo
