The partnership will make it possible for 3G enabled phone access 16 dstv channels for ksh 60 daily or 250 weekly. Now this is what separates boys from Men.I hope Menza is learning something from Bob.Customers want value not cheap valueless service. http://www.businessdaily...2/-/uywbr9/-/index.html

Rene Meza is still waiting for a windfall from his Ni Kuhama campaign. Absolutely clueless, this guy...

Its supposed to be free today. I've tried in-vain to open it. Dialed USSD *544#, sent the request, got the URL, tried to enter, dead. Is there anyone using it?

Tried it; works perfectly. On Nokia works pretty well; on HTC I apparently need to fit in my SD card - think memory is an issue. Works great; love it! The laudable is more often than not rendered laughable by overclaim

Alllllrighty! For all you SafCom lovers out there, it appears that Collymore and company is not only listening to demand, but reading Wazua. Now SafCom is back in the game with this move, and is moving on up the value chain, providing more than just cheap voice.
But the war rages on. Voice is now a break-even offering or maybe even a loss leader, but still the infrastucture has to be maintained and sold in order to keep SafCom's name and services in everyone's pocket. In order to win, Bob must now figure out a way to carefully sneak in small bits of advertising to sell- not full-on commercials- just small one liners here and there in the content, and must carefully tailor the content to what Kenya wants to see and hear. In addition, he must cache it to make it faster than everyone else. What does this boil down to?
It boils down to the fact that SafCom must move fast to broker exclusivity deals with local Kenyan television companies for exclusive content, and must sell phones with an HDMI video out that allows one to sit the phone on the TV and watch this content.
But if they are REALLY smart, they will hit the STREET and help to create this content by partnering with small-time local artists in the EAC, thus putting them in direct partnership with the content creators, and in competition with other media houses. Maybe they should start with a channel dedidcated to showing local Kenyan artists traveling, in concerts, and in the studio, and a SafCom news channel... but the content has to be top-quality and the lines, fast, hence the caching.
Back on the business front, I'd partner with Huawei and offer a cheap, reliable, SafCom-branded Wimax turnkey solution for businesses- a router, firewall, and Wimax combo that's plug-and-play, that will integrate easily with business networks of all size, that can be used for company internet and VPN. Businesses get a reduced price on the device for signing a multi-year contract with SafCom to provide data services. As the contract goes on, the cost to provide those services goes down, and SafCom makes more money as the bitrate for the services is locked in as bandwidth becomes cheaper... unless the customer wants to add two more years to the contract in order to get newer, faster speeds. SafCom could even lease the device, and offer maintenance plans for firewall security updates.
My my, the lines of the ICT business have blurred.
Back to the consumer market, SafCom sim cards must be the ones people still keep in their pockets and pop in when they want entertainment, even IF they are popping in competitor's sims for just voice. There is no longer exclusivity among the customers, so now Bob must focus on the value-adds.
You're Welcome Bob.
Best,
Hill

The dstv mobile is not exclusive to any service provider, its also not dependent on 3G Network. I used to watch the world cup 2010 on dstv using my phone and airtel simcard. I however got bored once i realized that i was 10 seconds behind i.e People in pubs would celebrate a goal ten seconds earlier that me. I tried connecting the phone with tv cables so that i can view the content on the larger tv screen and all that appeared on the tv screen was an image of a padlock. You can learn more about dstv mobile by clicking on http://www.dstvmobile.co...tent/en/kenya/kenya-home

The new deal is dependent on the 3G network and is available all over Kenya as long as there is 3G coverage. Also with this new prduct you CAN dock your phone to your TV as long as you have a TV out cable and watch it on your bigger screen.

Safaricom needs to remove bandwidth caps so that such innovative moves can become practical solutions. As it stands, people will see this DSTV service and think, "wow, how cool," only to realise two days later that the stream eats all their credit in one hour. We need unlimited internet in order to realise the potential of this medium

I believe at least for the DSTV trial they were not charging bandwidth. I checked. Looked cool, but they denied us the real channels - SS3, SS7 et al. Form is temporary, class is permanent

Was watching Ryan Giggs' greatest goal against the Arses (1999 FA Cup Replay) on youtube on my phone. A white dot (Man U were in the away kit) took the ball from the middle of the field, sliced past the first red dot (Viera) cut through a series of red dots the next thing was the white dot making its way back from the end of the field with what appeared to be a yellow dot (Seaman?) rooted still. If SS3,4,9 or whatever is like that, wacha ikae niendelee kuona mpira kwa DSTV ya display Uchumi Ngong Road.
