In all 8 years Chelsea have played in the Champions League the team that has knocked them out has then been in the final (assuming Man Utd get there this year).
In 5 of the last 6 years the team that knocked Chelsea out has won it, including the last 3 years.

Get your money on Man Utd for this year.

There is no way SAF is just gonna lie down and let Barcelona run with the CL trophy again. I am sure he has quite a number ideas on these final if both teams get there as is widely expected.

Winning the CL against the current Barcelona team would rank up there with his life time achievements. Merchandising income would go through the roof, top players [starting with Neuer] would find the idea of being a Man U player very attractive, there will be more cash to spend on transfers etc. etc. The list is endless. If this is not enough motivation, I don't know what is.

I know Barca also have their list and that is why I expect either one of the greatest finals ever or a very cagey affair depending on how both managers approach the game.

Back to the here and now. Barca and Man U must handle their business in the second leg before we get so engrossed in the final. Imagine if it ends up being a Schalke - Real final!!! Everyone would be shell shocked!

It's good the heat is on the other side. United are not taking Schalke lightly. They'll be out to finish the game and avoid something of a collapse like what happpened with Bayern last season. As for Real-Barca, I've never been disgusted that match watching such a game.

@ Maichblak.....If you look at the Man utd line up which will probably face Barca you have to ask yourself who is there in midfield to control Xavi, Messi & Iniesta....Carrick? Fletcher? Anderson? This is where the game will be won, one way or another you'll need to defend more than Barca. SAF can change all his tactics but he still has to find some balance in midfield. Barca's game is also very fast so hapa naona Vidic and Rio (who is experienced but very slow) wakihema vibaya. The only way out foe Man Utd would be to throw everyone in front score an early goal and defend the rest of the match.....otherwise naona kichapo of not less than 4 goals hapa.

I agree @Taz, our midfield will be stretched to the maximum. I would propose a strategy of defending and attacking as a unit with Carrick, Fletcher, Anderson, Giggs and Valencia all in midfield - Nani, should not be in such a game. At the back we'd have Evra, Vidic, Rio and Rafael (O'Shea would be run rugged)

Carrick would be our Pepe and Anderson would be our Diarra. Rooney would have to be upfront alone with Giggs and Valencia out wide. Movement would be a collective block up and down with options of Chicha and Park depending on how the game goes.

Of course that is all ideal cosndiering the team we'd be up against. But we'd have to play some pressing football to have any chance and that is where the hard part is - every Barca player has the individual skill to do that - Man Utd don't. However, we can do it! After Schalke of course...

Regardless of the outcome tonight, let no one expect a pretty game on sunday. Man U will definitely be playing for a draw which will all but ensure the EPL trophy starts its normal journey home.

Man U playing for a draw? I highly doubt! Do we even know how to do that? Man U plays to win - in every game. Why would SAF even consider playing for a draw with Arsenal? Those would be 2 dropped points - not one earned.

I would understand playing for a draw against Chelsea because they are the only realistic challengers but even then I doubt SAF would/will play for a draw.

Picture this [theoretical scenario]: If we drew against Arsenal and Chelsea wins against Tottenham, then our lead is slashed to four points. If in the next game Chelsea beat us, then the lead is cut to one point with two games remaining - with Chelsea having a superior goal difference! Who wants that?

In my book, the game against Arsenal is a must win. A win against Chelsea after that and the cup is back home. As earlier stated, Drogba, Cech, Lampard, Malouda, Luiz, Essien, Anelka and crew then give us a lap of honour - now that will be sweet.

The BBC veteran sports' analyst, Lawro has this to say about aseno-Man U game this sunday....

"I was in Germany to see United play superbly against Schalke in the Champions League, but I think people need to keep a lid on things - the opposition was hopeless. I think Fergie will approach the game like a Champions League away tie and be happy to take a draw.

Prediction: 1-1"

I can't agree more.

People like Giggs wil be on the bench am sure but I don't see why man Utd should play for a draw - we beat the same team 3-1 last season at the Emirates, albeit without Jack Wilshere, Woscie and who else?

All I'm saying is why put people like Gibson in a match against Arsenal?

Fergie knows very well that the easiest way to hit aseno is to sit back and hit them on the break. This works well and it has worked very well before. Let no one be tempted to think that the 3-1 Man U win against aseno in UCL a few yrs back was as a result of attacking open play by United. All the three Man U goals on that night were as a result of counter attacking soccer.

Another thing we must all appreciate is that there is nothing harder than playing an EPL match on a subsequent weekend after having played a midweek Champions League game.

The Reds boss also emphasised the high level of focus within his squad, insisting the opportunity to make history - by winning an English-record 19th title - isn't distracting his players from the task in hand.

"I don’t think it’s on our minds at the moment. If we achieve it, it’ll be great to reflect on, but at the moment we know we’ve got some hard games left. We look forward to the challenge, though.

"It’s important to keep momentum going by winning games. That’s vital. Draws don’t come into it now, it’s all about wins. We’ve got a big few games coming up and we need to win them."

Those are words of SAF himself.

Between Lawro and SAF, I choose to take SAF more seriously.

Giggs will NOT be on the bench. He'll get the day off. He plays next against Schalke or Chelsea.

Fvra's thoughts:

Evra explained: "Sunday is a massive game for us. It is a great opportunity. There is still a lot of pressure on us.

"If we lose and Chelsea have beaten Tottenham on Saturday, they will only be three points behind and they have to come to Manchester.

"That is what we have to think about now."

FYI, Barcelona played a second string side today and lost 2:1 to Real Sociedad at the San Sebastian. They remain 9 points clear at the head of the La Liga table.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid lost 3:2 to Real Zaragoza at the Bernabeu. Real Madrid’s loss to Real Zaragoza is the first time in nine years that coach Jose Mourinho has lost consecutive home games.

What impact will the weekend league losses by Barcelona and Real Madrid have on the Champion's League Semifinal 2nd Leg? Tuesday couldn't come any sooner for us to find out.

Oh my! All 4 teams in the Champions League Semifinals lost their league matches this weekend.

Barcelona lost 2:1 to Real Sociedad, Real Madrid lost 3:2 to Real Zaragoza, Schalke 04 lost 4:1 to Bayern Munich and Manchester United lost 1:0 to Arsenal.

Reads like a script from a horror movie. smile

Don't kid yourself. Schalke or Real score a single away goal to go 1 - 0 even in the 80th minute and it's game on. These ties are far from over. And when you factor in free kicks, corners, penalties, red cards, off-side goals, player errors etc. you'll realize it ain't over till it's over.

Man U and Barca need a goal or two before they can become comfortable.

It all but backfired courtesy of Song,Wishere and Ramsay in the mid while Sagna and Clichy closed the flanks...and Chelsea knows that!
