Safaricom snags a major deal [cheque truncating] joining Kenya's 43 banks!

I have to say that Safaricom is building various 'other' businesses & firms like Airtel, Orange & Yu might be left with voice only!

As for Access Kenya... if the 43 banks like Safaricom's services then what stops them moving wholesale to Safaricom to provide ALL the rest of their needs?

And where was ak when safcom struck?this deal could have given ak a fresh look for 5yrs,i fault their marketing...av just learned that barclays nominees account have huge chunks of ak shares no wonder ak is their provider..can they let it go?

AK is not dynamic enough to take advantage of new opportunities. They just can't cut it. The 40% corporate market share they keep citing will continue dwindling. Safaricom will eat them alive!

Airtels 3G rates; in my humble opinion wouldnt be too significant because of their initial footprint. By the time they replicate the same footprint of 3G as safaricom, and be able to challenge Safaricom on pricing effectively, Safaricom will seemingly have moved onto something else - probably bigger and better.

AK has LOST the plot! This move by Safaricom will encourage more banks to move to Safaricom for all things data including e-mail systems/service!

Im in the banking IT sector and I can authoritatively tell you that the number of bank corporate clients AK has is very small.The game changed in 2009 when KDN did the entire fibre backbone in Kenya and gave rates AK could not even try competing with.Most banks are on KDN for the primary link and Safcom for secondary link.
Formally employed people often live their employers' dream & forget about their own.

Airtel has the same footprint since it will be using KDN fibre which is quite extensive ...I think it has the largest Network in the country interms of connectivity.

The only difference will be handling the teething problems that comes with rolling out a new network but in the long run Airtel might even offer better 3G services only time will tell.

Airtel's biggest challenge is their way of doing bussines,you dont go throwing away money during such tough times.

I think if I was in the same shoes as Airtel I would have done the same take advantage of MNP by investing heavily in its promotion...Right now its the only option.

Rene menza is in a tight position,facing a dominant player who has an edge on product offering ,Currently the only weapon Airtel has is Price advantage and network quality which pales in comparison to what safaricom compensates for in this short comings.

Until Airtel money and 3G is fully rolled out airtel has limited fighting power.
