Is mobile number portability working in Kenya?

Today is 2nd April, and all fools efforts are over. Thought it would be fab to keep track of shenanigans preventing mobile portability.

Is this thing working?
Has your application been processed?
Have you heard 3 beeps on calling anyone?

i dont see this thing taking off as such in kenya. Why port whilst i can still hold 2 SIMS - which is what most kenyans do/have. The worldwide average numbers that port is 4-10% of all subscribers.

My take is that they should make it less bureaucratic i.e. allow me to port from my phone as opposed to filling forms & queing @ the shops. Kenyans r busy people so they will opt for the usual two sims.

Porting will work the question is how many pple will port.Aitel is doing a great job in advertising it lets hope they manage to tilt the balance of subscription base to their advantage.

But Kenyans are really incentive minded, Airtel should have another crazy offer to attract more immigrants.

Unconfirmed word from CCK: 250 subscribers ported as per lunch time of first day.

I guess they will know in 2 days. Then we will know if it works.

250 in one day - nothing to write home about
that's ~7500 in a month if the trend is maintained. A drop in the ocean

And that's after Airtel has spent oodles and oodles of cash on the nikuhama campaign. Sometimes I pity those guys, I bet they were anticipating a million porting requests per month. Shock on them...

Got same info as reported by Muganda from some reliable sources. And from that 250, around 50 have ported to safcm.

Dont think the portability will work the magic Airtel is looking for.

As an individual sample ten members Friends, family en Colleagus how many have taken note, mentioned porting to another network? for me none of the above

Sad Sad Hence Airtel is loosing more money than they intend to make in Advertisement, Bonus airtime and free portability. While safcom is bussy adding value i.e just did adeal of 50M with huawei for cheep affordable handsets.

I think airtel lacks an emotional connection with kenyans like safaricom does.I dont know why pple have a tendency to protect and market safaricom for free out of their love for the brand.

Airtel uses some very combative marketing strategies that ends up painting safaricom as an underdog and airtel as a bully,and many pple feel the need to protect the underdog.Am guilty of that sometimes.

The way Menza attacks safaricom in his adverts and press briefing does not resonate well with his potential clients.I think airtel should concentrate on its own value addition and assume safaricom does not exist that way they might win more customers.

I'm not a sadist but I think it's very easy to sabotage Airtel if they use this strategy of free porting (which idiot came up with that) as they are paying the porting company from their pocket while scom is giving you airtime worth a bit more than your porting fee (that's genius from scom).

Now imagine if scom and others released one million sim cards for porting and Airtel ported them paying 200/- to the porter, that alone is 200m gone!

BBI will solve it :)

d'oh! I didnt see it on that angle...that would really hurt them.Am thinking of idlers who would even use their idle lines to test the porting service from airtel since its free. That alone is costing airtel.

Make no mistake. Airtel's moves have been good for consumers but financially disastrous for them (and to the rest of the industry to a lesser extent).

Their strategy sucks.

I still use their network to call other guys on airtel. But when I want to call Safcom I still use my trusty (congested) network. It is congested for a good reason!
