Hey guys, why not try these too:

1. Repair vs Replace: Before you rush to replace something, consider repairing. For example, Instead of spending Ksh 150,000 to buy a new sofa set, you might consider having them repaired. Your sofa set will look brand new for much less than you would to replace.

2. Take good care of your things and if you lend something to your friends or relative, impress upon them to take care of your things. You can't keep on replacing or repairing stuff because of carelessness.

3. Avoid late payment fees, over-limit fees and high interest charges. You can't afford to pay these fees when you are having financial troubles.

4. DIY (Do it yourself): Do some of the home repairs or small projects on your own. Learn some skills from friends, workmates, relatives or neighbors. Browse the internet and learn loads of ways to fix common home repairs and buy some home DIY tools to fix your own gadgets.

5. Learn to say 'no': Do not give in to the whining demands of your kids for un-budgeted toys; to your friends invite for un-planned trip or to your relative’s request to host them, when you have no extra cash for the extra expenditure. Kindly decline in either case until you are able to spend.

6. Take up a money-saving hobby: Hobbies not only open your mind to new experiences but
they also take up your time that you would otherwise spend in the pub drinking away your hard-earned money that could be your extra cash.

Hope they will help. :)

Don't have kids unless you have the time and money and it takes a lot of both!
The rich have money working for them; the poor and the middle class are going to work for money.

always re-budget according to your income. do not copy paste a budget because the income is the same and 'nothing' has changed.

This means your fridge is working overtime, using more power hence negating what you are trying to achieve in the first place. Let it cool naturally before placing in the fridge.

- Rent a house close to your place of work and just walk.
- Take your torn shoes to a cobbler instead of buying new ones.
- Shift your gear to free when driving downhill to save petrol.
- Go for buy one get one free or promos.

These four points would not work for me.
- The houses that are walking distant from my workplace are too expensive
- My image and work does not allow me to go to work with a shoe ya kiraka
- Shifting gear to free on a downhill in an automatic car will kill you
- Don't buy brands you don't normally buy just because they have an offer/promo that's how you get stuck with stuff discover they expired 3yrs ago.

BBI will solve it

Over the festive season, I would advice the following:

a) If you are travelling long distance, book your bus early. If travelling say on Easter morning/Christmas morning, be the first one at the bus stop, say at 6am. Fares go up when the whole town wakes up.

b) Shop for bargains and buy in bulk. You'd be surprised how much you are getting ripped off in the same supermarket. Fast moving goods have competitive offers but the price cuts on these are lumped onto other not-so-fast-moving goods.

c) Festive season starts right after Ramadhan here in Nairobi. Shop early- get your chicken, goats etc early and freeze them. Take your kids shopping early when the streets are less crowded.

d) I totally agree with DIY- fire the 'mama wa kufua' mine used to charge me 300 for a week's clothes and she doesn't even clean the house. I fired her and do my own washing while I shower every morning. Washing your own house contributes to your exercise quota.

Grow your vegetables. If you have a sunny patch behind your house you can grow simple vegetables like spinach, hoho, dania, sukuma wiki etc. Considering an average Kenyan family spends about 100 per day on vegetables. Use recycled water (eg for rinsing clothes) to water them daily and compost some of your kitchen waste to make manure.

I haven't visited mama mboga since August last year except to the market to buy bulk potatoes and onions. By the way, which is a good species of onions to plant. Those big red onions?
