The question is how did you try to "limit access to my laptop drives'?

Use a live CD (e.g. Knoppix) to extract your data to a removable hard drive then crash the OS.

All my friends are heathens, take it slow. Wait for them to ask you who you know. Please don't make any sudden moves.

@Ikenya,

A pal requested to use my laptop for some time, since I had some sensitive data in one of my drives, I decide to limit access of the drive by use of file sharing option.

On trying to access the laptop drive C, i now get an error of access is denied.
My cursor has also be affected as it keeps still and hence am forced to shut down.

Pls assist

HMMMM............. That is a tough one: a job for a IT specialist, and am none of that. Personally I have created a 'guest account' on my lap top. It is not protected with a pass word, and it has no access to my 'private' files.

@ilikeyou: If you are using Windows XP, download the linux chntpw utility from here:
http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/
burn the utility into a bootable DVD/CD, enter bios and change the booting sequence to start with DVD/CD drive, load the burned DVD/CD and boot to load the utility. Follow instructions on the prompt. The utility overrides the local admin password and sets a new one, the one you define. You will regain your admin account, and hopefully you can reset permissions on your drive.

If you use the utility wrongly you can damage your system. The last time I used it was on XP, don't know if it works on Windows 7. Good luck

if you can access the window explorer where you see the icons for different drives, right click on the drive you wish to access >properties >security>advanced> here you could either change the owner or edit permissions.

log out and log in again.

i could email you the procedures in paint if this doesn't help.

awww!!!! so sorry i was away..and while i was away you played with your computer!!!
this is a very simple issue to resolve..

1.if you got windows xp you could run the setup like as if you are reinstalling afresh..then it would give you an option for repair and you click r. this repairs all windows folders and files and it would be like a clean install.
after that if you log in as the admin it would most definitely have access to all the data files..kwisha

2.you could also slave the drive in an external sata/ ide casing and from it you would be able to access all the files like as if its a flash..after this if its still not working you could backup and format the drive externally..this method is safer and ensures no data loss

3. if you had an image of linux or ubuntu you could run it..access the data and backup then reinstall the O.S

4.now that you have formatted the hdd you always have the option of doing data recovery if you lost ant valuable data..and it costs you like 5K!!
