Anyond who can explain this to us. They are becoming too frequent

Where did you get 170 from? or the plane was carrying excess!!! 168 is the number.

May God be with their families at this time of mourning; peace be with them.

if the incompetent and the reckless compete, the result is a disaster.. MN

Seems Tupolev's have a bad safety record - and now airbus seems to be inching in that direction...for KQ,were not both crashes (douala and abidjan) airbusi?

The problem with equality is that we desire that it be with those that have more than us rather that those that have less

Global climate change due to human actions.....pollution,deafforestation etc
BTW why does the Western media always refer to such falling planes as Russian made? Ever heard of American made?

Good point @made

When a Boeing or Airbus crashes, you never hear American-made or European made. Subliminal reporting?

@Pierce,

Road Traffic Accident (RTA) statistics show that the largest percentage of fatalities are pedestrians... So walking is not at all safe....

@skjay - You beat me to it. I was about to laud @Made on that interesting observation. Subliminal communication at its best. The Cold War never really ended. It is fought a little more intelligently nowadays. Especially now that you have Russia and China developing some serious muscle.

The German/French-controlled Airbus is facing a similar image onslaught from the Brit/US-controlled media. So far,I have not seen any statistical proof that Airbus is experiencing more accidents than Boeing (all factors constant).

That said, this is a sad occurrence. My condolences to the bereaved.

@dear Wendz,How does the crash give you 'some' relief? 168 people are dead.

Is it really wise to use Tupolevs to carry passengers.

I wouldn't wan tto board one.

I've noticed the youth in particular coming in to a workplace with a completely outsized notion of their own value and importance... just a thinly-veiled arrogance. May be the credit crunch induced recession is whats needed to remind us all about the value of hard work.... By Anonymous

@MADE,nice observation. @Adept,in recent months both crashes (until today's) were Airbus - the Yemeni one, with a sole survivor, was perhaps a smaller one than the Air France. What is more telling is that with some of these crashes, they really have not come out clear to say WTF really happened...esp for Air France. If a plane is just going to fall out of the sky for no apparent resaon (and especially over water) why do they bother giving the pre-flight safety instructions - how useful were those life jackets? I'd rather they gave a quick parachuting drill and issued parachutes and life jackets so if there is engine trouble or if someone blows up the plane,at least some people abandon the vessel and glide to the earth (or water)

-Obi Wan - I've heard thrilling tales of former USSR Ukranian pilots landing smaller Tupolevs on murram runways in jungle areas,These hard core, vodka inebriated pilots would work as freelancers, smuggling goods, helping drug lords ship their stuff out of South America/Vietnam/Afghanistan,or ferrying mercenaries to mineral rich war torn areas (Sierra LEone,Angola, etc those days at least). After the cold war and the breaking of the USSR,these aircraft just like the Ukranian pilots were available a dime a dozen. I recall on CNN's 'worlds untold stories' a feature about the smuggling of cacitrite (tin?) using such aircraft - the footage actually showed a dirt road, with a bend towards the end, being used as a runway for such aircraft - carrying HEAVY cargo - only those hard core guys (and aircraft) would dare work in such conditions and take such risks - with that dirt road,if the craft does not get enough thrust and lift by the bend, then .....
