I have this google ideos smart phone! I loaded some airtime yesterday of 100bob, I have not made any call nor have i browsed, tried to make a call today in the morning but the airtime is already used up! What the heck!

I suspect the gadget connects automatically in the background without your knowledge but at your airtime expense.

This internet option should be on demand. I should be able to switch it on and off! If you have this phone and you have not gone to the settings to turn internet off... now u know what is happening to your airtime

why do you think SafCon is subsidizing it? Mutalipa extra cost. I am not an android fan but there should be a way to limit datausage (On Windows phone 7 you can tell it never to use GPRS/EDGE/3G/4G e.t.c) and thus be using only WIFI and occasionally switching on the use of GPRS/EDGE/3G/4G.

Wacheni pang'ang'a. I use IDEOS.
1. Disable all services you don't require i.e. latitude
2. Buy a data bundle, it consumes far less - SMS 450. Nunua data bundle ya maana, hapana ya mia moja

My only problem with it is Airtel will not work on it, once they go 3G I intend to swap SIMs, data bundles in Airtel are much cheaper.

there is nothing wrong with IDEOS and the android,I use sumsung thats powered by android and any time you activate internet for data, you pay heavily,to avoid that, just switch off the data enabled feature when not in need of internet and only switch on when you want to use.

as simple as that. When am in the office,i switch on WIFI and benefit free company wireless

@Gordon Gekko @Burning Spear good points. Frequently in my life, I've also made my ignorance someone else's fault.

To use iDEOs with Airtel, surely there must be a way, there's always a way. Let the time come...

I cant agree more.
data bundle is more cost effective.Thats what I use,and its simple and easy to follow up the balance and recharge that using airtime. When am in the office i swwitch of safcom internet and activate WIDFI and works well.

@ peglo, welcome to the android world. fret not for help is at hand. here's how;
1. Go to android market and download an application known as Smoda widget.
2. after the download is complete long press on the homescreen, select add widget, choose smoda from the list of Widgets available. you should now see a smoda widget on the home screen. appears as a small square with a green tick or red cross depending on the status of your 3g connection.
3. what smoda does is that it acts as a switch that can turn your 3G connection on and off thereby saving you tonnes of airtime. you can switch it on when you want to access net and turn it off as soon as you are done surfing. this will also make your battery go for a longer period without needing a recharge. try it and post your feedback here.
4. as some1 suggested, always go for data bundles. for phone surfing, I always prefer the daily internet bundles on offer from safaricom (*544#). if you choose this option, I'd recommend you also download the app, 3Gwatchdog, which shows you how much data has been utilized and can warn you as you approach the daily quota.
happy surfing!

Just like any other gadget, computer, modem etc as the others have said just switch off the internet connection and connect when you require the services. When around a place with wifi use the opportunity to access free internet.
I remember there is a wazuan who had the same complaint concerning his modem and he came to the realisation that he's the one who always left his modem on and updates ran always.

@2012, don't be vague, be droid!!! With that tunda nyeusi you pay 2K each month. I don't consume more than 500MB each month and get all you get. Do the math.

It's Safaricom's next frontier, DATA. Bob said it; voice and SMS is dead. They're not selling phones, they're selling data.

@ sihingwa, assuming you are still using the stock /default call application, start it, go to contacts, press menu (I think it's the second button on the left on IDEOS), select import from sim card and you are done.

I think you need to look at how data is charged, as opposed to voice calls where you are charged as you use; the data billing is slightly different, it actually 'pre-blocks' and amount e.g. 100/-, after you disconnect, the remaining balance is released to you, thats why sometimes you get a message about how you don't have sufficient funds. This is regardless of the phone type/OS....so, in cases where the phone is always connected, no disconnection happens and the amount is 'locked'.

What is actually 'locked' is just 2MBs of data worth sh16 (8/-per MB). Just buy bundles.

Thanks @sumuni

However you said "...after the download is complete long press on the homescreen..."

Which is the home screen and where do you long press?

Also have you had an issue with pictures? All my pics are cut out, even FB and Twitter.
