Thanx @wasee for your response.

Its an acer 4720Z, i got the drivers alright, but the HD audio driver seems to get stuck at some point of installation.

Use system restore to restore the comp to a point before the installation of the messy audio driver. Then re-install the correct driver
Hope this helps...

any of your gurus got a clue how to remedy a conflict riddled multimedia audio controller in the device manager?
- System is xp with service pack 3
- machine is a clone with an intel board
So nice that its nasty, so bangin' its busting,
So slick that its sick, so dope its disgusting!

so sorry!! just saw read your post.. drivers for acers especilay the acer aspire are very easy to install... and to download...if you get the appropriate drivers from the acer site..for the correct o.s but still it doesnt work..from my experience its normally the O.S that might be faulty.
on normal basis when a driver is incompatible it never shows such an error..ever!!
so if you have another copy of xp you can reinstall or repair the O.S.
i highly recommend Svpack3 if you can get your hands on it. if it totally outwits you
holla and i might just sort it for you for free!!!
Blessed day!!
