She is lucky she did this under the old constitution!!! If it was under the new one she would find her self in court with all sorts of charges - neglect, endangering the life of a minor, mental torture, use of weapons of mass destruction, disturbing the peace etc.
Talk about tough love. LOL. But hats off for your mum. She did what had to be done though it must have been very emotional for her. And I bet she didn't even show the emotion. If you were my kid, believe me you'd still be having them things up to now - if that was the only solution.
Never count on making a good sale. Have the purchase price be so attractive that even a mediocre sale gives good returns.
