Mr Makwere told reporters that construction work for the port, planned to be bigger than that of Mombasa, is scheduled to start in February 2010.

You are better of hopping they will find Oil in Mui Basin by the time Lamu port becomes a reality. Shipapa is not a guy to count on.
Go overdrive in purchasing the goods when there's blood on the streets, expecially if the blood is your own

Alligator,feasibilty analysis is what was scheduled for Feb and it was done done by Japan. Tendering was done in September and China and Japan expressed interest. Construction is said to begin in March, so it might be a reality

Is the feasibility study report out? What about the EIA for construction of the port?

i was in Malindi recently, and wanted to take my family to go see Lamu. Apparently, when driving there, one needs to carry police escort given the high risk of bandits in the area,

I wondered, if they do turn Lamu into a port, how will they deal with all these bandits and poachers in the area? Or, they will all become dock workers?

@ Sure alligator & Dave.Kim...the factual information is that currently a feasibility study for Lamu Port is currently being Undertaken by Japan Port Consultants Ltd.
Mwakwere must have been refonstrerring to Mombasa Port Expansion Project which consists of building of 2nd container terminal and funded by JICA. The construction tender will be awarded in due course and construction may start in 2nd quarter 2011. Lamu is still cooking in the kitchen...

Thanks for the info. What does the feasibility study entail? Does it cover, designs for the port, proposed town etc?

And how do they plan on dealing with the Somali pirates? Considering the proximity...that should be their top agenda. No ship wants to go to pirates infested seas.
