My car is vibrating!!

Hi guys,
Need some advice. My car (well ... actually my mum's car which I've been using) has been vibrating for some time now and every mechanic I take it to has been giving me a different diagnosis. After driving for at least 10 minutes,when I stop in a jam,leave the gear at drive and step on the brakes to immobilise it,the car vibrates like a helicopter inside.
Some of the diagnosis I've received are as follows:
the plugs are wrong (I use BRK double pin) the car is too high (It sits on 14s and 7 coil springs) the throttle body needs adjusting (has never worked even after adjusting)
Has anyone ever encountered this or know what the problem and remedy would be? It is a 1998 AE110 and I don't want to think the problem is very big!

Hi Sasha,Please have the Engine Mountings checked. Damaged mountings make the car to vibrate alot especially when engine is idling.My two cents....

Damaged eng mounting; and if the plugs r ok,maybe some of the leads r kaput hence unbalanced combustion .U can also tell this by abnormal fuel consumption. Btw dnt leave the gear at D for long. Can silence be misquoted? TULIA.........UFUNZWE!

@Benzino: Thanks. Had all mountings checked last week and all are intact.
@Thimioni: I've noticed that consumption has increased lately but I've been assuming it's because the car is due for service. Also, I've already learnt from experience that I can't leave the gear at D for too long. Otherwise,my insides (and other parts) may start shaking when I get out! :)!
BTW: If I leave the car at D and kanyaga the brakes, is that idling? I thought idling is when you put the gear at N? Please educate me!

@Sasha: If the car is starting and driving smoothly,then u dont have to worry about the internal engine systems. As the others have adviced,get the engine rubber mountings checked. One sign of failed mountings is an obvious 'fwd or reverse jerk' when you change from N to D or from N to R while still pressing the brake pedal. In normal cases,this kind of jerk is small and smooth,and becomes quite pronounced as the mountings get weak. Another way to check is to open the bonnet,ask someone to change from N to D while still pressing the brakes. Look at the engine behaviour. If it appears to be moving/ tilting forward in a pronounced manner,the mountings are done. Btw,mountings can look intact visually but the rubber material has lost its elasticity....
if you apply brakes while on D,you are simply braking and restraining the car from motion. The engine is still fully engaded. Its just like putting a big stone infront of the wheel. Good practive is to get to N when not moving for sometime. You wil save on fuel.

Sasha, I think your automatic transmission is about to conk out. Have transmission fluid (ATF gearbox and CC for transfer cases checked level). There are some people who know how to sniff the ATF and tell you if the clutches are wearing. This is a common problem with Toyota automatics,particularly 3S engines and related gearbox. @extrablessed: Thank you very much. The car actually jerks when I move from N to D. I will have those mountings rechecked today in my presence.
@Much Know: What do you mean by this 'Have transmission fluid (ATF gearbox and CC for transfer cases checked level)'?

the 'idling' level is dropping..just check it when ur foot is off the fuel peddle,most cars i believe are set at just above 700RP...had a similar problem sometime back,my friend mechanic could not tell what was wrong...at a traffic jam..some lady noticed i was uncomfortable..told her the problem and damn..she knew too much...the kind i would not marry.

Sasha,there are two transmission fluids. ATF - Automatic Transmission Fluid,pink in color is poured inside the Automatic Transmission case. Gear oil - Colloquially known as cc in Kenya,heavy fluid put in the Transfer case(next to engine) and the differential (it is also used in manual gearbox) Low cc will not be an instant cause but would mess the automatic transmission in the long run if you have been running low,eventual result in most cases is automatic transmission problems. Again the automatic transmission problem could result from many other factors including ECU failure and driving in rough terrain for long periods (especially Toyota),have someone sniff your ATF. sasha. 3 things need attention. 1. 'BUSHI'- could be worn out. 2. RACK ENDS also called TIE RODS could be worn out or damaged. 3. BRAKING SYSTEM: ie brake pads or brake shoes could be kaput. DIAGNOSIS: Vibration while stopping If your car vibrates only when you slow down or stop,or pulls to one side or the other,that's a good indication there is a problem with the brakes. Damaged brake shoes or pads,or worse,a warped rotor will cause the vehicle to vibrate when you slow down. Other speed-sensitive vibrationsLoose or broken steering and suspension components can cause vibrations when accelerating,decelerating or changes in speed. aiiiiii.......@Jaribu: you have set your own exam and really to answer it -though incorrectly. Pls note that @sacha's problem is vibration when the car is on halt! pls respond to that! This has nothing to do with brakes,bushi,bla bla bla. Other suspension problems and poor oiling,ATF as you indicate can easily be evident if the car is in motion esp on uneven road surface....
Meanwhile,@sasha,you dont to pay a mechanic to have the engine fluids checked. Next time you go to a fuelling station,just open the bonnet and tell the attendant 'niangalilie uko mbele'...then go see what he/she does. They will tell you if there is a problem or if the fluids need topping

@mlefu: So ..... what was your solution? Did it work?
@Much Know: Thank you. Now I understand better. The ATF and gear oil were changed at the last service. I would expect that they are not low by now.
@jaribu: Brake pads,rack ends and bushes are all new. Had them replaced at the last service after a long countrywide trip. Had the rear drums also changed as the lining was worn out. Thank you for your contribution!
@extrablessed: I do that everytime I fuel (which is once in 3 - 4 weeks). Only been told to refill once and I did!

@Jaribu - clearly reading and understanding is not your strong point - no offence. @Sasha - if it was manual I could tell you 2-4 things that could be wrong....having said that,the innards of a gearbox are essentially the same....I think you should have your gearbox opened up - in a manual,that vibration - the correct word is JUDDER - has to do with worn release bearing (which in turn causes both the pressure plate and clutch plate to wear). I know about 0.5% abt automatic cars,but I gather they have equivalents of pressure/clutch plates...thus when you depress the brakes,the drive shafts act to STOP the differential (thus the primary gear in the gearbox - so its at THAT POINT something is wrong - in a manual,THAT POINT is the flywheel. pressure plate,clutch plate and release bearing....so whatever their equivalents are...should be the problem. A good example...if you are driving a manual and gear down to number 1....then press the brakes BUT NOT the clutch...the car will judder then sputter out and die.
Those who said worn mountings....hmmmm! That is so off the mark - esp for a stationery vehicle. Jaribu takes the medal for trying - brakes! my eye!

@Sasha - further to my post below - I think you may also need to check your CV joints.... e.g. when taking an acute turn at slow speed,do you hear some 'click click' 'tick tick' kind of sound?

...If u have a worldspace radio you can listen to CAR TALK on NPR radio. The hosts always get such kinds of questions and of course answer them with a lot of humour...like they would ask you 'when it vibrates do you feel nice...?
...and by the way,with so many vehicles - both new and junks-,and Kenyans love for junks - why is there no program,both on radio and TV discussing vehicles? mmmmmmmhhhhh...this could be my opportunity to get on radio and become a 'celebrity'

@Djinn: The CV joints are very ok. There's no sound. Would that sound cause this vibration at a stationary point? Otherwise, thank you. Seems I have a lot to have checked. I also wasn't too sure about the mountings but I wanted to double-check to ease my mind. What is the risk in having the gearbox opened and scrutinised?

@Sasha,as MuchKnow suggested,if you can get someone to check the transmission fluid that might be a good indicator - if they can drain it completely and if some debris is present...then you know the gearbox needs to be opened up.

my dear @sasha,dont open the gearbox so soon unless you are very sure its the cause of the problem. it will might cost you a leg and an arm. gearbox problems are usually noted during transition from 1to2,2to3,or on a steep hill (like at NIC) while driving very slowly. DONT OPEN THE GEARBOX YET!
Remove and replace the rear engine/gearbox mounting. The jerking experienced when you engage will reduce and ....the vibrations will reduce siginificantly or be eliminated altogether...
