To add to what inf8nity has said so far,
I have created two very successful websites or blogs for myself. These ate
www.arimifoods.com and
www.joshuaarimi.com. I also have three other websites which are not as successful.
1. Webdesign: I do it myself using wordpress. Very user friendly and intuitive. Check
www.wordpress.org. Many big personal websites are built on wordpress e.g Zen habits (
www.zenhabits.net) which was the best blog in the world in 2010.
2. Costs: I host all my websites with
www.bluehost.com.. Domain name $10 per year while hosting costs me approximately 100 dollars per year. very cheap.
3. Content is king as infinity said. You need to update atleast once a week and not scraping (copying and pasting) other content online.
4. Learn basic SEO (search engine optimisation)
5. Use social network like facebook to grow you readership.
6. Ensure you install option such that your readers can access your site on mobile phone (optimised for mobile phones especially in Kenya). Try accessing
www.arimifoods.com on phone and you will see what I mean
BTW Sunny Bindra website (
www.sunwords.com)is built on wordpress.
