Thumbs up for East African giants Kenya.
I have always thought Botswana, Ghana and Rwanda are safer than nairobi.

@Young

We live in Nairobi and have experienced something very different from what we are reading in the media.

NB: All the times I have been attacked in Nairobi, I never report the matter to the police. The police are worse than the thugs on the streets of Nairobi.

The only time I reported was after being Bus-jacked at midday. We were left in Kangemi but told to report at Muthangari. We did exactly that. They stole 100 shillings from me but I reported they had taken 29 thousand which I had withdrawn to pay my employees. Another guy said 14k etc.

Six weeks later, the same group hijacked a Shuttle but were mowed down by Muthangari police officers.

These guys work in cahoots with police and even hire guns from them. The police record amounts stolen by thugs in order to know what cut to expect. That's why its good to report exponential amts to ensure a shortfall in tallying.

On being 'short charged', the police usually hit back in revenge on the next mission.

Would you bother report to such officers? So, how do you account for unreported cases? Does that mean when cases are not reported, then no crime was committed?

If you've been to Nairobi and later to Kigali, Kampala or Dar of late, you would not dare say Nairobi is safer.

@ Surealligator, While we should call a spade a spade we can easily tell who our worst enemies are.

i have been carjacked twice this year.. ati safe when another pal of mine carjacked was left next to state house..

when the thugs carjack you and disappear with your car.. i am told do not bother looking for it elsewhere.. look for it at the police lines... you might need to pay off a cop to get behind the lines for you..

Might be true! Yes crime is there but as compared to the days when you could not even pick a call on a your cellphone at the CBD or stay past 9pm in town! It is relatively safer! Anyone who's been to the real SA not the suburbs will explain why Nbi's safe, in Mexico police have to wear hoods simply to hide their identities, Brazil's army has had to clean Rio coz of the coming olympics, in US guys have built tunnels to transport drugs, stabbing in London is an everyday affair, Lagos is but another story....

Crooks raided a house within my compound 3 months ago... Followed one of the residents into the compound. The report is nonsense! Most crimes are not reported!

Fellow Kenyans!! I am always amazed by us, kenyans!!! No wonder Michael Joseph said we have queer calling habits..

1. What makes you guys think that in SA, Rwanda, Uganda, Botswana etc that ALL crimes are reported and therefore their figs are 100% accurate? Maybe they also dont report all the crimes just like us in Nairobi.
2. What do we want? When US declares that the country is unsafe and issues a travel advisory, we are up in ARMS!! that the country is safe. Now we are told we are the safest..NO!! we scream, we are not a safe country!!

I have met many West Africans, who after visiting Kenya, are amazed!! Why? coz we love to complain and therefore they expect that nothing works!! Only to find a public transport that works!! Elec that is guaranteed!! (if you think u have black outs, visit other countries..esp West Africa)
Its good to complain but when good news are announced, lets feel good!! and be proud to be Kenyans!! hapana ku-complain tuu wakati wote!!

Infact the report ranks Nairobi as safer than London and many European and North American cities. You only need to look at the British press and you will be shocked by the daily reports of stabbings. Statistics show that you are more likely to be murdered in London, New York, Paris etc than in Nairobi.

True. things are not so rosy out there. In lagos, while you are seated in traffic, petty thieves would point a gun at you to lower the window, clean you out after which they board an Okanda & disappear.... Now imagine what 'serious thugs' would do

@Evolve

If we are ever to overcome impunity, poor services and address root causes of our misery, we have to face the truth first and then devise ways of dealing with the problem. Denial of reality is the worst human experience we continue to endure grandly as if it is an African culture prowess or Kenya's cultural identity. Our leaders continue lying to us day and night.

I felt proud in the week when Citizen TV interviewed people on the street over the validity of Wikileaks cables. All the people said they know the cables were speaking the truth. However, our leaders were still shouting over their heads that what the cables contain are rumours and lies. You and me know the US Amb use serious intelligence agents to gather information, credible information, that become raw material for making credible decisions.

Hiding criminals in the streets of Nairobi is not hiding your dirty undergarments from plying eyes. It is condoning underworld activities. Am a member of Kareng,ata Ass. We built hardy police station (The only one with a beds and blankents in the cells). I still receive crime data on the ground. So, I know better what am saying here. Even Young was surprised that Nairobi had abruptly turned to being one of the safest cities.

The day it will be safe, I will be in the forefront of celebrating the same.

Is it un African to call a spade a spade?

Such incidents are compounded by the complacency of the police and the fact that there are no police posts and police patrols in most of the slums.

Police frequent the slums only when arresting illicit brewers in order to extort money from them. This has made slum residents lose confidence with law enforcement agents. "People have become demoralized and have resorted to using their own devices to ensure their own security," lamented Muturi, a Kibera resident. "We have community policing but it isn't effective.

The information volunteered to the police on criminal activities is leaked to criminals who later come to threaten residents for betraying them to the police. " This has made criminal gangs take advantage of the situation by claiming to provide security to the residents.

The gangs demand protection fees from the poor residents and those who refuse to pay risk being killed or having their houses burnt. In October this year, the government gazetted 33 criminal gangs and warned the public against dealing with them in any way (East African Standard, October 20, 2010).

Eighteen of these gangs operate in Nairobi slums and were responsible for the eviction of people from their houses at the height of the post-election violence. Today, their members continue to control many houses, dictating who occupies them. Members of the public living in such houses are forced to pay rent to the group. The disappointment, the helplessness in the hands of criminal gangs, makes slum residents feel excluded.

Maintaining the security of all individuals and their living environment is therefore paramount in creating a feeling of inclusion and an atmosphere of participation in society

This depends all on who you ask - if you got carjacked at some point you definitely don't believe it. I personally have never had my house broken into or got carjacked. But I always have this fear that it could happen anytime esp. carjacking and that fear makes me feel like Nairobi is not a safe city. Maybe we have nothing to fear but fear itself.
