I was a kid then but I'm in the financial industry now and I remember our MD mentioning that inflation was around 105% in 1992 and tens of banks collapsed during the period.

It is painful to think that we'd probably be 2nd or 3rd to SA and Egypt if we had continued on the same trajectory of the late 70's when I understand we used to give aid to Malaysia who then went ahead to adopt our sessional paper 10. The rest is history.

@The cotton industry, I remember my dad telling me that Eldoret Town used to have very heavy traffic in the morning from guys going to the clothes factories but after some politically connected guys started importing mitumba, all those companies withered.

@the sage,
I witnessed....I actually visited Raymond ltd in 1984 and it was one of the biggest employer in Kenya.Right across the road was the then Ken-knit and on the otherside of town was good ol' Rivatex,There were other vibrant industries in Eldoret those years such RV bottlers,Unga,CPC and East African Tanning.Raymond was bought by some local Indians and renamed Heritage mills while Ken-knit building were bought off by dairy firm Spin-knit....In late 80s,EA Tanning was one of the biggest exporters of mushrooms....i doubt the others are still in business.
Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.

Given the damage Moi did to our dear country and countrymen/women over his 24 years of misrule, why do we cough up in excess of 2m for his 'pension' in addition to other benefits and staff every month??? Isn't ridiculous that we are as mad as Joe Jackson over this? This payments/allowances etc. need to stop. And that's just the beginning.

This fellow and his cronies continue to enjoy their ill gotten wealth in peace. We need to go after this guys with all the force we can get. Take everything back and throw them into jail!!! Oh how I wish Matiba got just one term - while in good health!!! He would have pulled this off! We need a full ministry - not department - dedicated to search and recovery of everything looted from Kenyans over the years and prosecution of the culprits. In mo1's eyes he feels he did great,he justifies everything he did...does he have nightmares at night or he just sleeps like a baby? somehow life has been kind to him...he has aged well together with his ilk...and after their peaceful deaths they will be buried as heroes.

@ mpenzi,

I thought sololo and jirongo are one and the same thing...sololo outlets ltd

Yes; Sololo = Jirongo

He'd chosen a good name for the company "Sololo Outlets" that is, an outlet for public funds!

The culprit was Gideon Moi.

After that he supplied KCC with enough toilet paper to last them 25 years...all supplied at once.

When the deliveries started rolling in, all the warehouses filled up.... then they converted the milk cold rooms into toilet paper storage space.... soon enough there was no money to pay farmers [since all of it had been given to Gideon!] and there was no space to keep milk [since all of it was full of toilet paper!]

Yes; KCC was killed with toilet paper!

IS THIS REALLY TRUE?

When you mention Moi those of the lost generation always have this angry feeling. I recall my mum's friend puttying us while we were in campus (1993-1997) and it went like this: we were so unlucky because:
1. Moi had just introduced the 8-4-4 =(0)system plus maziwa.
2. Prices of everything had just gone up courtesy of Goldenburg/Jirongo,Kosgey, Ruto....
3. Jobs were no longer assured except for those with "tall relatives".
4. Free university education (boom etc) had just been scrapped, no ice cream mayai etc and you know what became of student welfare at campuses.
5. AIDS had just set in when we were discovering ourselves (the worst the previous generation had to contend with was gono)........

I still remember this lecture so clearly, let the old man and his cronies be remembered for butchering dreams of a generation and of a nation.
