I would only do this as the last resort... That is, if the doc says i either do or go blind.... because either way, i will go blind anyway...

Thanks @Ric Dees. I stand corrected. Was relying on older figures. Also, some ophthalmologists will 'suggest' one or two additional 'good to have' procedures in the name of making the entire procedure 'safer'. Of course, who would not want error free eye surgery? Can freak the hell out of anyone considering the risks involved so you have little option but pay up for the extras. Can make the effective cost a little higher than what they advertise.

But like you, it is not something I would fancy doing. Even a 5% risk is a little too high in my view for a procedure you can comfortably live without.

@Jangwa not quite, Laser eye treatment is GBP 300 per eye roughly KSHS 36,000. I too wear glasses and have worn them since class 6-7 so maybe like Mukiha i have come to accept them as part of my face lol, however i have contact lenses too and change them intermittently depending on different circumstances.

However what you need to know bout Laser eye treatment is that it's not permanent after 3-4 years you will be back to where you were if not worse. I almost crossed this line some 3 years back until a colleague told me bout this decided it was just not worth it.

I've been on glasses since 1985, converted to contacts in 1988 and have have used them since - monthly wear from Johnson&Johnson. Once went to Optica Moi Avenue to enquire about laser and they said that at my age (mid forties) they would not advise it. They also proposed that if I insisted on the laser treatment, I should consider medical tourism in the Far East

I fear contact lenses coz of the gory stories I have heard...people getting bad eye infections,the lenses abrade the retina and could lead to blindness...afadhali macho nne
The utimate goal of investing is to buy low sell high;if we re-write this core equation in psychology terms it becomes buy fear sell greed.

@sheep, soft (jwala) monthly wear contacts. Most comfortable as opposed to the hard ones which are plastic. Never had infections - just follow the regime 1. clean hands thoroughly, 2. clean lens with the correct solution, 3. store in the correct solution, 4. give the eyes a breather each night i.e. take them off before going to bed.

@misdemeanour,

This may be of interest - was in a church in shags over the weekend and they made an announcement that Upper Hill Eye And Laser Center [UHEAL - based at UHMC] was offering eye examination and laser treatment at a local church hall today - only/specifically for diabetics with eye complications.

I thought this may either be subsidized or part of their CSR program both because the cost they were quoting was nominal [sth like 3reds for exam & a k for laser treatment per eye] and they were categorical about attending only to diabetics. Like I said, this was meant to happen today so you are late for this session but chances are there are more - you may contact [after googling] them for details....

@mwende,

Am sorry if this amounts to a hijack of your thread.

Mwende...

Please answer Mukiha's questions... wachana na hizi pang'ang'a zingine.

1. what's the cost? if not specific give us a range.
2. Why would one take the option you're offering? besides "being tired"..

I'll add a third one...
3. Is it true I'll be back to the same spot after 3-4 years like someone said up here?

@Ms Mkenya
We are located on 5th Ngong Avenue, 5th avenue building. 3rd floor.call 2713403

LASIK is a permanent correction of the eye refractive errors. It corrects vision(whether short-sighted or far sighted) it is also for persons who cant read small print and are astigmatic. All you have to do is come in for an eye diagnosis(pre LASIK assessment).

The procedure goes for about 75-85k per eye.

@mozenrat
your eyes will not get back to the same state they were in or be worse. We are using Allegreto wave machine(made in Germany) Well, as you know Germans are respected for Precision smilePlease note that the eye like any other part of the body ages with time, so say you can read small print now, later on you may not be able to, so if you choose, then you can undergo the LASIK procedure if you dont want spectacles at this point.

@sheep
Try LASIK. you dont have to wear glasses or contacts. For the contact lenses- ensure you wear good quality contact lenses otherwise your fears may come true. Also some time back some solutions were banned.
@Gekko
You may want to Sheep on good solutions to use.

@slammers

Laser for the retina is mainly done on the retina.Retinopathy is the deterioration of the eye's retina caused by diabetes and is the leading cause of blindness among diabetics

LASIK procedure deals with the cornea.
With nearsighted people, the goal is to flatten the too-steep cornea; with farsighted people, a steeper cornea is desired. Excimer lasers also can correct astigmatism by smoothing an irregular cornea into a more normal shape

Advantages of LASIK over other vision correction procedures is the relative lack of pain afterward and the fact that good vision usually is achieved by the very next day.
