www.standardmedia.co.ke/m/?id=2000022756 Kenya coffee output drop but earnings soar. Interesting to note that coffee goes for 757 dollars per 50kg while beans fetch half a dollar for a kilogram

Not true...

1) Beans come from berries. The flesh has to be removed. It's like comparing price for MADE Tea vs the LEAF...

2) Also the $757/50kg is for the topmost grade of coffee [There are multiple grades but AA is considered the best]. I am sure the farmer who sold these 'AA' berries got way more $0.50/kg. Don't compare a Mercedes to a Nyayo Car...

3) The berries need to be processed into beans then stored. The berries are transported to the factories where the [expensive] machinery is used to process the beans. For the expensive/quality beans the process is longer.

4) Beyond the auction, there are transport costs, insurance, roasting, etc

What farmers need are many options to sell their produce... Comparing coffee prices at auction vs farmgate prices is silly at best... The total 'value' of materials in your laptop is less than $100 but the 'expertise' in putting it together costs way more! Thus you pay $2,000 for top of the line laptop...

@vvs, Good analysis or is it analyses? For tea the conversion factor is roughly 1kg made tea for every 4kgs green leaf. Green leaf could give less than $1 to the supplier while we see made tea fetching $3 in MSA weekly Auction. @Wazuans(1) What is the conversion factor (cherry to beans as in 50kg bags)? (2) How many kgs can a coffe tree produce per year? (3) At current market forces, which is more profitable; coffee or tea? I'll appreciate ur input.
