hi all,

the mashujaa day went all right and alright with the mention of the heroes names until the last name was mentioned...the retired president Daniel Arap Moi...he was a hero up untill 1978...therafter he f***ed the country right, left and centre and left it in total mess and millions of people hopeless...he does not deserve any place in the books of shujaas!!!!people like the late bishop Alexander Muge, Bishop Okulu, Kenneth Njindo Matiba, Charles Rubia and others who fought Mois kleptocracy earned their heroism, but they are kind of forgotten...how sad!!!

...and hey the athletes that were paraded during the celebrations and all others after 1990 deserved no hero's status...the modern day athletes are just businessmen and women with no patriotism blood in them...why would they defect to Qatar, Sweden, Kuwait etc? Why would they not represent the country in the just ended commonwealth games in India, while they are busy running in Europe and America??? the true athletic shujaas are the likes of Kipchoge Keino (late 1960s and 1970s), Naftali Temu (late 1960 and 1970s), Henry Rono (1970/80s), Daglous Wakiihuri and Kariuki (the marathons in 80s and early 90s) and the list goes...

that is my opinion....whats yours??

The pre independence Moi actually played an important role then and was a hero then. But like a donkey the last note of his tune spoiled all the good things he had done.

@Kaigs,

I do not remember seeing any quatari defectors among the athletes yesterday. One common attribute that runs among the older generation of athletes is that they have nothing to show for their patriotism... Just mashida and more mashida. Patriotism has to be tempered with reality. The reality that one has children to feed, and the gava will not feed your kids for you no matter how patriotic you are. Ask John Ngugi, Mahmoud Abbas, Joe Kandenge Etc. These guys gave everything to the country but ultimately, they have been keft to fend for themselves.

In some countries, national mashujaa are properly rewarded. It just doesnt happen in Kenya
Great men are not always wise, neither do the aged understand judgement...

For sure, moi does not deserve to be in our heros list. His reign was tyranical and abusive to kenyans.we still sing, yote ya wezekana bila moi whenever his traits appear in our leadership.he perfected impunity.tribalism and other negative things that led to our current mess.so I think Mr moi belongs to our list of villians not heros, never!

Hope a misguided person did not sneak in Samuel Wanjiru's name in that list. That would be the height of irony. However, if somebody found it fit to include Moi's name then in Kenya you can't be sure of anything anymore.

I do agree Moi's name should not be included, but then we just cant forget him, cause its him who created Heros out of the above mentioned guys and many others. Whether he a hero or villian come this day of mashujaa his name will always be hovering around.

Woe unto thee all hypocrites...Lets be objective on this.
Kenyatta "gave" us independence... he is the founding father of this nation .but he also grabbed land size of a province, appointed relatives and tribal cronies to gvt ,it was also during his tenure that Tom Mboya,Arw Kodhek,JM Kariuki disappeared.
Moi game during Kenyans enjoyed peace ,government appointments to top seats were relatively distributed a cross the country.
Moi also gave kenyans a gift of Goldenberg ,many gvt institution collapsed during his tenure and it is only him who can tell us where Robert Ouko went and how.
Kibaki came, he gave Kenyans "economic growth","free education" and THE CONSTITUTION .However, when historians write Kenyan history, the following will be indicated in bold font that it was during Kibaki's tenure that the country came to a standstill for a full 3 months! He also gave us Anglo Leasing,Grand Regency saga,Arthur Bros ,tribal appointments to key ministries with impunity.
Then what happened to Chrispus Mbai? only Kibaki can asnwer that.

@ Arapsonkot,

At least in Kenyattas time from what i hear, for ordinary citizen, there was harmony and people were well off. I also hear that in 1978 Kenya was in the same level with Spain development wise.

In Moi's tenure there were all manners of harassment, intimidation from his boy's known as special branch and other spy sweepers. This instilling of fear went all the way to our bedrooms. What you are calling peace was actually fear. If you never worked in a ministry or a parastatal, then you know absolutely nothing about high offices appointments distribution.

In 2002 when Moi exited power what good was there for him to show? Walking naked and hungry people? Dilapidated infrastructure (Roads)? Fully run down economy? Poor or non existent medical services? Tell us?

Samuel Wanjiru is one of Kenya's biggest modern hero, contrary to mwenza's selfish assumptions. He won this country the most covered toughest gold in the FINAL event of the last olympic games as the whole world watched. It was joyous to watch that clip of a grinning kenyan over n over again on BBC n CNN. If only Mwenza ditched tribalistic bias n selective glorification! Embrace all kenyans! What did our commonwealth mboyz do that wanjiru didnt do at the SUPERIOR olympics?
