Kenya: How Plot to Bomb Clinton in Country Was Foiled

http://allafrica.com/stories/200909070624.html

I thought we are promoting tourism? Why does the press reports contradict our countries policies. Why are acts that did not happen, became news, actually Headlines...

Najib will be wasting our Tax money trying to promote tourism and all the AGOA summit will be non productive. Does any one take time to edit the daily papers.

How can we now Request the US to take off the travel ban

Dissapointing!!!

Responsible journalism - in Kenya that's an oxymoron.
Unfortunately media companies in Kenya only think of the bottom line so don't count on them that much. The thing I wonder is who's to blame? Is it us the readers who keep them in business or the media companies that dish out the content?

Bright and interesting people talk about ideas.
Those of average intelligence talk about things.
Stupid people talk about other people.

the media did the right thing to report the truth-after they had got the facts- no matter how bitter it is. this is to awaken foolish kenyans who are living in denial,in a world of make believe oblivious of the dangers and risks we are facing as a nation. this will make kenyans to be more alert and wake from deep slumber of comfort and self satisfaction. YOU NEVER SHOOT THE MESSAGER! in the media,it's dishonest to bury the truth, even if it's risky. actually, investors and tourists applaud such police action of deterring crime and terrorism thus acknowledge their heroic efforts. we should salute the nsis for unearthing the bomb plot. even in more developed nations like usa and uk,reports of suspected terrorists being apprehended are aired daily as in the report below that appeared in bbc website on monday about 3 terror masterminds being found guilty.

Of late there has been increased reports of murders, robberies, heinous crimes. Crimes of the election violence when people butchered one another like dogs. These are yet to be prosecuted, people stole maize and subjected our country to hunger these too are forgotten, people stole land many years ago yet these two became passing stories,There are people left out as Refugees in Uganda and all IDP camps accross the nation yet they are ignored. Slums blooming on small and big towns all accross the country,Of how Kirinyaga families are surviving after Mungiki,of where the tanks from the pirates went,or on what else was stolen during Moi's regime,of families that have started to mend ethnic ties, appeals to reccouperate money stashed abroad,of need for reforms and smaller cabinet.....

Why not just seek to write stories of a police officer who saved a child,of a robber who accepted Jesus,of corrupt officials who gave all they had stolen back and to the poor,of families feeding other families,of hope, trust and progress. Stories of Heroes among us.

Lets stick to the issues that affect our country. If policemen want to become heroes let them deal with the local crimes,do away with bribes and make our country a safe and liveable place

When i read the headline i also got mixed feelings... heroic & counter tourism... after reading the below posts each one of you got a point... genuine points in the opposite directions... as of journalism esp for front page, the contents must be appealing & or touching such that where there are varieties you would definitely go for it.. DN editors put this headline in a way that most readers would be anxious to know what kind of threat was foiled to this dignitary even if it countered effects to woe tourism.. and on that they did sell..

you've heard me..

Caesar:

I concur. There were better stories out there that should have made the headlines. What is our fascination with stories that damage our reputation and destroy the efforts to market Kenya as a viable state? We have to wake up to the realization that in the mind of Westerners (the same people who have insisted on travel bans to the tropical paradise called Kenya, and who will not issue you a visa because they reason you are running from insecurity),nothing positive comes out of Africa! Last month “The New York Times’ ran a story detailing the threat posed to Westerners by the Somali militants. They even cited reports that Western embassies have reduced their staff to the bear minimum! Now,I do agree that the Al-Shabab are a feisty minions but what realistic threats does this motley crew of discontents and zealots pose to an established democracy full of people with elegance, style and panache like Kenya?. Their aspirations are way out of line with their capabilities! Last week the ‘Economist’ ran a story that almost predicts the demise of the EAC because its an African project! The cumulative effects of these editorials and unwittingly, our own editorials,is that in the mind of Westerners (the people we want to attract as tourists),Africa is doomed and consequently, this has spawned the recent eugenic theory that we are lesser than the rest of humanity (read about the views of Dr. James D. Watson- the general view is that we Africans are ten hairs away from being baboons). We have to decide once and for all whether we want to continue fanning this hysteria that causes a pathological misconception of the situation in Kenya (in Africa at large) or we will chart a new discourse for ourselves. A responsible media would educate its clientele on the tenets of civilization,of brotherhood and not the hate mongering that was witnessed before the 2007 elections, protect the interests of the country and its citizenry and foster prosperity instead of casting aspersions on the dreams and aspirations of the people. WE NEED A RESPONSIBLE MEDIA. Kudos Caesar for bringing this up.
