Just been slapped with a land rates bill for approx 900,000 inclusive 740,000 interest. I am aware that the house which was formerly owned by my dad had arrears but this bill is just ridiculous.

Am expecting some chums in about a month but they have given me only 14 days to pay up. Is there any recourse, or can someone direct me on how to proceed? Thanks.

Ask them to form a commission of enquiry to investigate. U should be talking to a lawyer asap am sure there are ways to petition them.

@Sizzla,
From the heading I thought it is something to be tabled in parliament!NCC waives interest(I think once a year)to encourage rate payers to pay up,though I don't know when this happens
If you wait for the waiver,you will have saved 740k.As for the principal ,you may nEed to see the minister for local government ?

Kwani what was the time period for 160k to have earned an interest of 740k. Sounds like day time robbery to me. Are you sure they are not looking for a bribe?

BBI will solve it

Thanks for the quick responses. I know for a fact that my pops took a couple of short cuts, leaving me with some hefty water and elec bills that i eventually sorted.

Was actually planning to follow up on the land rates but i have been short on time. I think the waiver might be the way to go, so if anyone knows the details/requirement kindly assist ASAP.

@wendz the rate depends on what is called site value and this also takes into consideration the land size. i.e valuation must be done

Rates are based on valuations done when the roll for rateable properties is prepared by the council.They DO NOT depend on current values or purchase price

There is a procedure for redress under the Rating Act...but you'll forgive me for this nimesahau

@ Sizzla, I feel for you, 900k is a tight sum.
@Wendz, its not too much in Syokimau, paid mine sometimes last year, will check and advise how much it was.
