Why did cnbc close shop here?

The utimate goal of investing is to buy low sell high;if we re-write this core equation in psychology terms it becomes buy fear sell greed.

Heebner made some bad calls in the subprime fiasco and Fortune magazine had to write up a follow-up article after a previous issue had praised his fund management acumen.

Nothing doing.

No doubt some of the guys that made this list deserve the props they get...but quite a few were JUST LUCKY as evidenced by their "casino-like" returns.

Which begs the question, "Who is a great trader?" One who consistently delivers Alpha or someone that returns 150% and follows that up with 2 down years?

+ Livermore blew up more than once, (and committed suicide after losing everything) post 1929.

+ Paulson is looking more and more like a one trick pony [APFund YTD ~ -11%]

+ John Arnold had obviously taken a good look at Enron's (one of the biggest energy players at the time) book before starting Centaurus.

+ Mad respect for Soros but he was more of a "portfolio-manager picker" (Niederhoffer, Druckenmiller etc) than a trader for Quantum. Betting against GBP was actually Druckenmiller's idea (that he found when drunk ) but Soros took credit for encouraging him to bet big.

Also, Soros sent his son to Niederhoffer to learn how to trade....that's saying something!

How Simons failed to top this list & Druckenmiller missed it altogether, I cannot comprehend.

P.S- Sorry to hijack the thread but are you guys watching this (& secretly rooting for Anthony Ward (Armajaro)?

You, also might have missed this...

Livermore was a manic depressive, he didnt loose money in 29 infact he made cash by shortin the mkt, its said that JP morgan implored him to stop shorting it so as to restore confidence..as for the list it isnt listed in order of greatness...Simmons is a legend, hes the daddy of quant trading

soros not a trader? surely a guy credited with being behind the greatest trade ever re- shorting the GBP/DEM cannot be described as anything other than...

I never said Livermore didn't make money in 1929. He was worth ~ $100mm ( which is > 2.0 Billion today by some estimates.

What I said was that he followed that up by losing it all ...and in 5 years!

He was declared bankrupt in 1934 and killed his-self in 1940.

I never said Soros wasn't a (great) trader, what I said is DRUCKENMILLER FOUND THE GBP TRADE (when housed) .....though much of the credit unfairly goes to Soros.

In all it's years of existence, Quantum has, apparently, only had one down year (tech bubble) and you can only do that by switching PM's around (attrition) which is the same thing Steve Cohen does at SAC. This, I offer, is Soros' greatest strength.

I completely agree. Same thing Louis Bacon does at Moore and that is why he poached Greg Coffey from GLG. It is hard to make those profits with the kind of capital these guys have. They still deserve much credit.

Are we taking trader as someone who built a succesful business empire on what he had.
Someone who made 10n from a million is better to me than defending a 200mn worth of empire for a duration.
